Short term home ed

I don't think that I could pull off long term home ed but would love to take my son out of school for the last half term of year six before secondary school kicks in and while he still likes me! Is this allowed or do you automatically lose any secondary school places by opting out?
Thanks

You should still be able to keep your place at Secondary School.

I took my son who has aspergers out of school a few months before finishing primary school due to anxieites ...registered him at secondary school .....but he didnt go due to his aspergers ..but you could just register as normal to secondary school.......

Has there been problems with the school? Have they been supportive? Have you been to talk to them about taking DS out for the rest of the year?

We took DD3 out for a "short time", but it was the best thing we did and although I had been saying for years that I would not be able to home ed, I found it so good for both of us that she never actually returned until she went to the local college for year 12. Once you realise the benefits and relax into the home ed, you might decide it really would be best for you.

I would suggest phoning the LA and asking them if the secondary school place is secured even if you take him out. If they say no, then perhaps you could agree to keep him on role at the primary school, but not attend (so give authorised absence in effect) so no problem with secondary.

You can definitely keep the secondary place. The LA cannot discriminate against children in admissions arrangements on the basis of their previous education, unless there is some specific provision for that in their admissions policy (eg feeder schools).

Just make sure they don't assume that when you deregister from primary it means you don't want the secondary place anymore. They shouldn't assume that, but I suppose they might. Drop them a line when you deregister to confirm you are still planning to take up the place at secondary school.

I took my son out of school after the first term of Year 6 and he missed the rest of the year. He was still on the school register (officially, he was 'off sick'), but I think he would have got a place at secondary school regardless. It did mean that he had easy access to open days and various visits, but I'm sure you could arrange those directly with the secondary school and ask if he can go at the same time as his friends from primary.

It was an excellent time to take him out because he missed all the repetitive SATs revision.
