We found that the best place to start was with a specialist dyslexia organisation. We used Dyslexia Action.
Our EA don't fund dyslexia screening, all we had were excuses and being told not to "label her". It was so refreshing to talk to the experts!
DD had an assessment lasting about 2.5 hours with an educational psychologist and this gave us such an in depth report of her strengths, weaknesses, and how to bridge the gap between them.
It was one of the best things we ever did for her! It cost a lot financially but was worth every penny.
How old is your DC?

We were lucky in that the school and LEA that DS attends do fund dyslexia screening at thankfully it was the same level of in-depth screening that jomid has decribed above. I was always watching out for dylexia with DS as all the male members of the family on his dads side also have it. For a while we were told to hold on with testing as children naturally do things like mirror writing until a certain age. DS was tested in yr 3 of primary which thankfully is so much earlier than some. The report from the ed psch def confirmed dyslexia and a prob with DS's auditory memory. If done properly the assessment should be as Jomid described and the report that comes back is about 4-5 pages long. Immediately after testing DS was given superb support and looking back now I realise how far he's come thanks to early detection and correct support.

Thank you both for your replies Thanks

My son is nearly 6, i know he's still young but its really bugging me. I worked as a SENCO back in the days and i'm 100% sure he is! And its not just the reading and writing i have concerns about. He dresses himself and wears every single item of clothing the wrong way round, everyday! And don't get me started on his shoes! Shock

He has never been to school so i can't really explore that avenue. I will look into Dyslexia Action jomidmum, thanx

my dd was never diagnosed in school, as she never came home wwith a reading book and slipped through the net, but luckily i know someone who tests for dyslexia, and i now pay for an hour session each week. we didnt get any funding for the test or the sessions, which are proving quite expensive at £25 a week. ive also got a sneaky feeling that my 6 yr old is dyslexic too, but cant be tested until hes 8, but tbh i dont think i will bother as im now doing the same 'work' with him that i do with my 8 yr dyslexicc dd
