And if so, would anyone be able to point me to a template?

Thanks!

Hi

Is this in England? And what have you said to LA so far?

Iceflower · 15/03/2012 14:49

Thanks, Fiona for responding. I'm in England and have used the template from the EO website for deregistering from a special school. I am intending to hand it in tomorrow.

The school is an independent special school.

The short answer is that I don't know whether you "need" to send a letter to the school. I don't believe there is any kind of legal obligation to do this.

Having said that though, I personally think it might seem odd if you didn't mention it to the school (taking the opportunity to big up home ed and one-to-one support etc) and the school just heard about your plans from the Local Authority.

But I don't know for sure, so please double check!

Although the template is for the LA and the LA have to give consent, my understanding is that it is in addition to sending the "normal" dereg letter to the school. So the difference with a special school is that you have to do two things:

  1. Tell the school to deregister the child
  2. Ask the LA to consent to the deregistration.

I'm not sure whether the fact that it is an independent makes a difference, but I'd probably err on the side of covering the bases (especially as it would be the LA I'd omit, if I was omitting any).

I still haven't done the deed [hides from accusing eyes of being cowardly]. I had the letter done, went to see the headteacher yesterday.

To cut a long story short, dd is AS, but can veer to an almost autistic state at times. This may last for a day or two, a week or two Grin. She finally found a way to tell me this through a Youtube video she found.

During these periods, she is barely functioning and unable to attend school. If forced to, she finds it terrrifying and lapses into depression.

I told the HT this and she asked me what I thought the solution was. I said I thought there was none apart from homeschooling, when she floored me by suggesting that the school could work with this, so long as the LA agreed. She will bring forward the annual review and suggest this to the LA, in the meantime dd will remain at home.

Thank you for your replies. I will probably be along with more questions in due course.
