Teaching a language

Hi All
Just wondering for those of you whose DCs learn a language, how do you go about it? As per the previous thread on learning French, the ideal is obviously immersion in the language. That's not possible for us but I would like my girls (7 and 8yrs old) to start 'absorbing' another language.
Thanks in advance

I did the BBC "Muzzy" course with mine when they were 9 and 11. They both liked it a lot. You could easily start at 7 and 8.

Skoldo do quite a nice French course - it comes with a CD, which includes some fun songs.

The other thing is to buy books they already know in the foreign language and read them aloud. That way they know the story and can concentrate on the language - we have books like Elmer, Miffy, The Mole Who Knew it was none of his business, Peace at Last. DS1 now has a go at Famous Five in French. We picked up loads in France - found a great secondhand bookshop!

Put a notice up in your nearest university asking for a native speaker of whichever language.

Say you pick French, get a native French speaker to spend a set amount of time a week with DC (£7 - 10 hour was the going rate at my uni for foreign students tutoring in their language) while the French student i with your children he/she is only allowed to speak French. Your children can use English or French but all answers to questions will be in French.
