These are brilliant!

For the eight-year-old: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/maths/

For the 12-year-old: www.galorepark.co.uk/product/parents/54/so-you-really-want-to-learn-maths-book-1.html

For both: www.mathletics.com/

check out www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm. The MEP programme is free and has lesson plans and practice sheets. There's a yahoo support group for users of it as well.

I'd suggest Mathswhizz for the computer based learning, it's not free, but we love it.
We also use the CGP and Galore Park book.

Hi there, for your 12yr old, take a look at www.stuckonhomework.com it covers the whole GCSE Maths curriculum in online video's :)

stressedHEmum · 08/07/2011 09:02

We use Galore Park textbooks for maths.

Online we use Manga High, Cool Math, BBC Bitesize, Woodlands Junior School site, Top Marks and a few more. We did use MAths Whizz but we couldn't afford to keep it up, sadly, because the kids loved it.

We too use CGP Books, excellent, highly recommend.:)

Hi, We used the old STP books for KS3 maths, you can find them sometimes on ebay or in 2nd hand book shops. We have finished with ours, if you would like to try them, you are welcome to have ours, just PM and I'll send them to you. Now for GCSE we are using Conquer Maths. If you home ed it's only 9.95 per month. "Z" aged 10 loves it.

For the younger one you could try Mathletics, my younger son used to dislike maths but he is really enjoying mathletics.

Frankie, stuck on homework looks really good, have just bookmarked it because we may have to give up the steiner maths lessons we attend (too expensive) and this programme looks really good.

I watched the introductory video from the stuckonhomework site last night because one of the people involved got in touch with me to ask my opinion. As a cost comparison, the stuck site is £89 for a year and I pay £20 for an hour of maths tuition once a fortnight but our family's maths tuition is incredibly idiosyncratic and specifically NOT for any exam preparation. Anyway, from what I can see, the stuck site has several hundred hours of video lessons covering the GCSE maths curriculum. For those who know the Khan Academy, it's a bit like that, except it's English exam-specific and you get to see the person talking rather than just hear their voice. Oh and it costs £89 where the Khan Academy is free. But the Khan Academy is generic and would involve more work on the part of the parent to find syllabus-specific content and also I guess the KA explains things US-style? So maybe a better point of comparison for price would be eg NEC GCSE course or shared tutor rather than online videos? I should praps add that I won't be benefiting financially from talking about this!
