de-registering and general help

Ok, we have just made the decision to de-register our 10YO at the end of this school year. At the moment I only plan to home school for one year, but this may change.

What will happen after we de-register? I'm worried about having to fight our corner:(

Also can anyone point me in the direction of any books/resources to give me a bit of an idea of how to home school, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and worrying about getting it wrong:S

TIA x

Ok, lesson for me, look before you leap!
Have just spotted all this info further down the page Blush

I would still like to know if anyone has faced any opposition at all to HE?

Glad you found the info.

Do you mean opposition from LA or school? People sometimes get that, particularly if the child has SEN or the family has been in dispute for a while.

Sometimes people get opposition from family members who are worried for some reason about what effect it will have on the family. Occasionally people get questions from the general public, but you don't need to worry about that. You can treat it the way you would other questions about your personal life - answer if you feel like it and not if you don't.

If you want to ask other questions, go ahead. Are you planning on EHEing for Y6? Have you met other EHEers in your area?

Thanks SD!

I guess I'm worried about the LA really, I'm sure school will kick up a fuss too but that's nothing unusual.
Yes we are planning on just doing Y6 for now, but if things go well then maybe more. I don't know any other EHErs so I feel a bit lost at the moment. I've joined the local(ish) Yahoo group and found meetings once a month held nearby. I'm thinking of going along soonish to see what I'm letting us all in for!

I have home educated for three years and we would not have it any other way, I home ed my 5 ,8 and 15 year old. I suggest you look at the website for Education Otherwise as it gives you lots of practical tips on what to do following de-registration and how to handle the situation when the LEA insist on a visit and paperwork, they also run local groups all over the country which meet every week and arrange home ed camping trips, workshops etc so you get to meet others in the same situation. Now that you have de-registered you may get threatening letters from an education welfare officer (EWO) and by the time you have an assement with the LEA inspector you'll be terrified, don't be! In my experience the LEA put the EWO in her place and told me on hus last visit that to send my children to school would be a dis-service to them! Home ed is not an easy option but with good support you will both come to love it.
