Looking for a tutor

Can anyone help? I need to find a good and affordable tutor for Maths and English in or around Barnet North London.

My son will hopefully take IGCSE's next year, once I find him a place to sit them, and get my head around all he needs to know.

Any recommendations will be welcomed. :)

im not sure what a tutor would charge in london, but have you thought about using www.interhigh.co.uk or www.briteschool.co.uk may be surprised and find online school may work out more cost effective. i imagine some tutors charge £30 a hour? both excellent online live teaching.my daughter has experienced both schools. both work to igsces. i know briteschool are more flexible on just taking a few subjects, whereas interhigh want you to pay for all, great teaching with both though! you can get private tutoring through briteschool.

Thanks very much, that has been really helpful.Smile
I'd not heard of either to be honest, but will look into them now.

Cost of tutors varies from £25 - £30 per hour.

It took me months to find a tutor in my area. There were lots listed with online agencies but I got very few replies to my enquiries. Just plain rude IMO but there you go.

Eventually I found a final year student who was advertising for tutoring work on a University list. She's doing Psychology but has excellent A levels in the subjects I wanted help with, plus she's very cheap Smile.

It might be worth looking at that route if you can't find a qualified teacher. I wish I'd looked at this list earlier as she's proving to be exactly what we were looking for.

Good luck Grin.

Thanks streakybacon. I'm coming across the same thing - namely no response to my email enquiries.

Might sound stupid, but I'll ask all the same.Smile
How do I go about finding a final year student? Besides, keeping an eye out at the local library notice board for example.

Dh found ours on a site called Universitytutor.com. You search by your area and it brings up a list of potentials to go through, just like any other tutoring site. Took a while to find someone who fitted but at least it gave a few more leads. It was free to make initial contact and there was no registration fee. Once I got an interested response I asked for more information, got her CV and met her for a sort of interview. That said, I guess it depends on who you approach and how they want to conduct meetings etc.

Worth trying though. Hope you find someone Smile.

do you know which subjects he will study first. one at a time or a whole load together.

I would recommend www.conquermath.com for his maths igcse. My son used that and it had everything he needed, all under one roof.

Science, we just bought the igcse text book, worked our way through it and then loads of practice papers and into the exams we went.

Finding the exam centre was the hardest bit, but once i had that, we were away Smile

I second Conquer Maths. Even I can understand it and I'm a maths duffer. Very clearly presented lessons, written worksheets and reliable software.

You can get a considerable discount through Education Otherwise too {grin].

chickorita · 24/02/2011 10:55

Thanks so much to all of you for your recommendations.Smile

It can all become a bit daunting,so I appreciate your help.

I'll take a look at Conquer Maths, and the university site.

Hi does anyone know of a tutor in the stockton on tees area, my son is 7 years old and he is struggling with Maths. He has just recently been diagnosed with Dyspraxia, so really looking for a tutor 1 night a week, anything that helps really.

taradakin · 19/03/2011 09:46

I am a tutor. i use to teach at Haberdasher's Aske's School for girls, not a million miles away from Barnet.

i went onto study child psychology and now assess children for social and educational needs and write Education Plans. However, I do tutor but I am priced higher due to chartered Psychology status.
It is really easy to get your child in an exam centre. All you need to do is go on the OCR or Edecexel website and search for exam centres in your area. Alternatively, call your area secondary schools and ask if they take external candidates for the June examinations. Have the syllabus code to hand, there will be an entry fee but it is standardized.
Good Luck, Tara

Thanks very much Tara. I believe that I've found a school for DS to sit the exams next summer. Smile
