have three dcs (11, 9, 7) who are quite bright, one dx sn, one who has expressed interest in he, have been toying with he on and off (not yet decided), but have come across this school and it looks interesting.

student-centred, four day week, emphasis on community and parent involvement. am i being conned in some way?

i'd be really interested in hearing your opinions - haven't stuck my head above the h-e parapet before...

It sounds interesting - I doubt you're being "conned", but I guess you'd need to see the school in action to find out what it's really like. They say all sorts of things about atmosphere and discipline, but there's nothing quite like seeing them on an ordinary day to get a genuine feel for them.

I don't know the value of Canadian $, but the fees look like big numbers to me! Plus a 4 day week makes it unlikely you'd be able to work, so you'd have to think about the cost, plus all the extra costs like uniform, trips, lunches, etc.

Just done the arithmetic - actually pretty cheap compared with private schools here Hmm - I'd maybe also be asking them how they can make the figures add up!

thanks - am going to try and arrange a visit. pound is about $1.50 at the mo.

is there a uk equiv of a student centred approach (other than he) that you know of? it just seems like an interesting halfway house approach...

I think there are some "alternative" independent schools around, but I don't know anything much about them or how they operate, as I think they tend to be in leafy parts of England and I've never heard of any up here!

IndigoBell · 15/02/2011 16:03

Some interesting alternative UK schools are the very very famous Summerhill and New Forest Small School.....

madwomanintheattic · 15/02/2011 16:13

thanks indigo, will have a look.

Here are a few schools I have liked over the years phoenix
paris
and another interesting one Sudbury
And the two uk models summerhill and frensham heights

madwomanintheattic · 15/02/2011 16:40

summerhill looks terrifying! i don't think i'm quite ready for such wholesale democracy Blush the ethos of the new forest one looks similar to the one here. i'm not sure what i'm looking for really - i don't think i'm quite ready to he, but we are moving soon and i need to make some decisions.

the girls seem fine in this school system - not brilliant, but just fine, but it's not suiting ds1 at all.

thanks mummytime - will have a look at those as well.

I've known people who have gone to Summerhill and they didn't have positive things to say about the place. Seems it was quite an abusive place to be.
