Any tips on getting a tutor?

I've been searching online lists of private tutors for ds (nearly 12) who is HEd. I've found what looks like a very good one and he's coming to talk to us on Thursday.

Can anyone give some tips about 'vetting' him? I've never done anything like this before and if I had the choice I'd have got someone through word of mouth, but I couldn't find anyone. Just want to be sure I'm getting someone who will work well with ds and not push him into schooly boxes, but work round his needs (he has AS/ADHD and is quite a complex character).

Ta muchly Grin

Is he a teacher? Id certainly want to know his background. What subject is it for? What are his qualifications & what experience has he had? How will he tailor the work to your childs needs? Does he have any direct experience of children with AS/ADHD?
Id want an idea of how he works. Id want to know that my childs learning style would be catered for.
A good tutor should be happy for you to sit in on the lessons too (although you might not want to!).

have you considered a internet school? may work out cheaper and your son may enjoy doing things online? He would have class mates also then, although they would be virtual!

Go through a tutoring agency, like personal-tutors.co.uk

The safest thing to do is always to have the lessons happen in YOUR house i.e. tutor travels to you, not your child to the tutor. My brother has always worked that way, and completely expects to travel.

Thanks for replies.

Sounds as though so far I'm doing things right, which is reassuring Smile.

I've found him through a tutoring agency, loads of details on there about background, subjects, qualifications etc. He also has relevant SEN experience and we've exchanged a few emails about ds's specific needs and he's willing to go with our requirements, rather than tick-box him iykwim.

Lessons are here at home or online.

The agency advises to ask for references and CAB which the tutor will provide at first meeting - with it being so upfront on the list I have no qualms about asking.

Don't think Internet School would benefit ds because I think he needs 1-1 at this point with someone sitting down and actually working with him, so it needs to be a human being tutor in the same room Grin.

Some good advice here, thank you. I'm feeling more confident about it now Grin.
