Home Ed groups in Berks?

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me about HE groups in Berkshire? I am in Reading this week (we have a house in Reading but are currently living in Ireland on a temporary basis) and was due to visit a home ed group in Twyford, which has just been cancelled.
Are there any groups running today, Thurs or Fri this week in the Reading area?
We are looking at schools and HE groups this week for when we come back to Reading. I am trying to get my DH on board with HE, but he needs to see a group in action!
Thanks!

We used to go to one in Reading. It was for children up to 8 years old and grandson got too old for it.
Not sure what day it runs or if they've changed it.

Watching with interest, also considering HE in Berkshire.

Thanks Marjorie. Unfortunately this is the group we were supposed to go to today, which got cancelled. It no longer runs weekly because of poor uptake, just runs once a month now.

Are you on this list? uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/BerkshireHomeEducators/

You could ask there. If there isn't actually a group which is convenient, perhaps you could post there and see whether another family would like to meet up with you individually. That could give your husband the chance to get some encouragement, especially from another dad.

That's great!

I suggest you go along to a group quietly on your own first before taking your dh. There are different sorts of groups and not all of them suit everyone.

You might find that the first one you go to doesn't do the sorts of things you would enjoy and attracts a particular type of HE parent. That could lead your dh to wrongly conclude that (for example) "all HE families are hippies and we wouldn't fit in" or "all local HE families are Christian and it isn't for us."

One of the turning points for my husband was meeting a local HE dad who shared his sense of humour and one of his hobbies: then he could see that HE wasn't just for "other people." But I do know some local families who have a different background to ours and while we get along OK, meeting them wouldn't have encouraged my dh to HE! (He can be a bit closed-minded at times.)

Your DH sounds just like mine! I decided not to take him, Im going to check it out in Reading & also Ireland on my own first. We have a years grace before we need to really decide, and we are going to apply to a couple of schools too, so all options open.
Thanks

I'm taking grandson to the Heroes group in Twyford on Monday for the day.
It's our first time going there and some of the activities look great.
I'll put some feedback up when we get back.
