Online homeschooling Nat Cur of Eng

Hi all - We are in a peculiar position at the moment as South African expats living in the Middle East. Our children attend a British Curriculum Primary School. The economic recession has hit us hard and my husband is closing his company in the ME. as of end August he is jobless. The kids and I will be taking a sabbatical in Thailand until such time that my husband has secured a new job and we have financial stability again.

I am considering homeshooling for one term until we have more clarity of our movements. There is a great school nearby BUT the initial application and endowment fees are horrendous. We do not want to put down this type of money until we know for sure that we would stay here at least for a year or longer.

Any ideas/links for online homeschooling sites teaching the National Curriculum of England would be highly appreciated as I have no idea what the UK offers with regard to homeschooling primary aged kids via virtual learning environments.

Please help. Thanks!

Hi Expat, my ds went to an internet school - Briteschool - here, which teaches the English National Curriculum and I know they would do their best to accomodate you, in whatever timezone you are in.

We are delighted with the results my ds has achieved there - he has just had his iGCSE results and got 5 A*'s and 3 A's.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I saw the site on the internet and then realised that there might be a host of sites out there and I would be better off asking for recommendations. It is reasuring to be hearing a recommendation for the same site. Thanks!

You're welcome - if you contact Dom, the headteacher, he will arrange for a demonstration of how the online classroom works.

Thanks, I will set the balls rolling as soon as possible and contact Dom too. I have studied online myself so is at least familiar with this style of learning.

Congrats on your boy's results. It is oustanding wow!

Are you children over 9 years old? as briteschool starts from 9 years old, and there is also interhigh which starts from 10 years. Have experience of both! or you could buy a curriculum pack with daily timetable instead from structured home learning or educan. Structured home learning gives more support over the phone as again I have used both! Good luck on finding something that works for you all!

Ooops mumof4darlings, one is only 8 and the other one is 10 years old. What online options would there be for the 8 year old other than Brite and interhigh? I really prefer online opposed to homepacks/distance ed. We have a couple of advantages such as the kids being very proactive on the computer (blogging, designing, photography & paint, chat etc), as well as myself having completed a masters in education online (I researched VLE's for my thesis - albeit with a focus on postgrad adults opposed to scholars). I prefer online communities of practice as offered by online schooling rather than distance ed (if I have the choice mind you LOL).

Any more ideas? Gosh I am new on this site so still have to find my feet. Thanks!
