Would coloured woodwork suit Nutmeg White in a hallway?

We’re painting the hallway and I’m looking for ideas to inject some colour -thinking about the woodwork to do this. We’re planning on using Dulux Nutmeg White for the walls, but thinking the woodwork could be more interesting than white. It would then be on 6 doors upstairs and 4 down, plus the bannister and skirtings - new build. I’m thinking that This or even This could work, but I might be totally off the mark. The front door is east facing with a panel of glass that does let some light in, but it’s darker upstairs. Is this likely to look good, or be too dark? And is this even a nice idea or will it look bizarre?!

The only person who really has to like it is you.
Imo, the first colour doesn't coordinate well with Nutmeg White and I think you would get tired of woodwork in the second colour very quickly.
I would suggest looking at Pinterest and House & Garden to get some ideas that appeal to you and then take it from there.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, the first is actually one of the ones Dulux pair with it, but it might be a bit overwhelming on so much wood.

I agree. 10 doors of it probably wouldn't work. See what you come up with when you have a browse on some websites.

Thank you, I have researched which is how we’ve got to Nutmeg White, I was just hoping for some real people’s perspectives too.

I have found Google ai or chat gpt quite helpful in terms of suggesting paint shades that go together. Totally up to you but I wonder if it would be easier to put colour on the walls and have the woodwork nutmeg white? As easier to redo in future.

Jurassicparka · 12/07/2026 11:32

That’s a good point about the future. That’s a really useful thought, I’ll think about it the other way round.
Unfortunately ChatGPT only ever seems to give me colours that aren’t available when I do this!

Are your doors usually kept open or closed? If open, you’d have an orange door in every other room - not easy to coordinate.

Much easier to use a nice off white (maybe even nutmeg white!) on your hall and landing woodwork, and then pick a colour for the walls. Even if you colour drench the woodwork in other rooms, having a white door open in the room isn’t likely to be too jarring.

I actually think patterned wallpaper is great for hallways and landings. It’s a space you don’t spend much time in, so you can be daring, but can also keep a pale background to stop the space feeling too gloomy.

Or lean into the dark and pick a warm mid-tone shade that reads darker without much natural light. Pinks, blues and greens will all fare much better than yellows and oranges - which will just read brown on a dark landing.

Jurassicparka · 13/07/2026 18:10

Thank you, yes the darkness with the orange could be too much and also tricky to change later. I’m thinking now of maybe the walls and woodwork in an off white and then something like a wall or the back of the front door in a colour for some interest. I love wallpaper in the right place but we have some that you’d see so it might clash, but lovely idea thank you!

Stick with white gloss on the woodwork. Your future self will thank me for it.

A colourful back of the front door is a great shout.
