Need to choose new fabric for study chair and footstool

I'm want to get the chair and footstool in my study recovered, but I'm struggling to pick a fabric as a) I don't have an interior designer bone in my body and b) I'm overwhelmed by choice.

So do I go for plain or some kind of texture? The curtains are patterned, so I don't really want another pattern, but the fabric that's on the chair at present (which is cream and doesn't go with the rest of the room) has a sort of embossed pattern of the same colour and I quite like that). I want something that's going to blend in nicely with the room, not stand out as a focal point of it.

The carpet is this, which is grey and white: https://ulstercarpets.com/residential/ranges/queenstown_swedish-grey/

The walls are mellow sage (which I think is now called natural sage): https://www.johnstonespaint.com/colours/green-paint/natural-sage

And the curtains are a pattern with leaves and birds that is a blend of several greens from dark to light, gold, raspberry, mid and light pink (I'm going to try and attach a photo, but not sure it will work).

Can anyone help please?

Possibly not of help, but have you asked Chat GPT or similar to help here? It can help you visualise combinations to make a decision.

Actually that is helpful @Posywosey thank you! Chat GPT says mustard yellow, dark olive or blush pink and to go for velvet, because it's the most cat-proof material!

That carpet could be tricky with cats. I think looped piles can catch in their claws and pull? Might be worth asking in the cat owners section if you havent already bought it.
I agree with chat gpt. A deep rose pink velvet would be beautiful.

Have you asked your upholsterer for guidance? My tips would be

  • Make sure you pick upholstery grade fabric
  • Look at a colour wheel to see what looks good next to each other, and also what contrast colours work well together
  • Think of how and how often you will use the chair e.g. if you pick wool and often have bare legs, you might find the fabric itchy, particularly in summer. The deep buttons on a Chesterfield look great, but I absolutely loathe them to sit on, as I find them so uncomfortable etc.

Thanks for the additional tips. I've now got some fabric swatches of velvet. My concern though is that it's going to be too hot in summer. The cotton fabric that I have on the chair at the moment is cool to the touch and perfect in either summer or winter, but the cat is able to damage it by scratching it with her claws. She is a bloody nightmare with sharpening her claws on everything, despite having a perfectly good scratching post 😡

I'm allergic to wool, so I definitely won't be getting a wool-based fabric and anyway, again I think it would be too hot. Argh, I feel like I've narrowed down the colour choices, but now I'm struggling to find the right fabric! I might ask in The Litter Tray ...
