Wood burner smoke

Have had a log burner which was installed 14 years ago, has caused a lot of smoke damage to the walls/curtains/blinds over the years but have really enjoyed it over the winters. Now about to redecorate in light colours & debating whether to persevere, get it smoke tested or remove completely & install a gas fire.
Has anyone got a log burner with minimal smoke escaping or is it inevitable?

Mine doesn’t cause any smoke damage and I think is older than that. Definitely have yours tested

I have a wood burner and have no smoke damage (white walls). Sounds like there's an issue with yours. Do you get the chimney swept often?

Celiathebanshee · 03/06/2026 12:30

Mine does not leak any smoke - there is something wrong there

Our log burner was only put in a couple of years ago but we have no smoke damage or discolouration at all.

No smoke damage here. I would upgrade to a modern super efficient one.

I have one that was in the house over 30 years ago when we bought it. The chimney is lined and regularly swept. No smoke staining or damage whatsoever. Yours sounds positively dangerous.

Suggest you get a carbon monoxide monitor as a matter of urgency

Another vote for get a qualified chimney sweep in to clean and test your burner. Never had these issues in 40+ years of owning a burner. I agree with pp there a very high chance your needs some corrective maintenance.

There's something very wrong with your logburner. Get it checked. You must have had the chimney swept regularly, did the sweep not comment on it?

We've had a logburner for 20 years and have never had any smoke escape/damage. We have white and cream walls/curtains so it'd be very noticeable. All smoke goes up the chimney.

Thanks for all your responses-we will get it tested asap!
