I am thinking about getting this kitchen from Howdens but unsure on the worktop

its the cream units (porcelain) but not the darker ones that are shown in the photo.

At first I was thinking a wooden worktop but then a granite worktop would be longer lasting.

And what colour? Then I still have to choose a sink and taps!!!

oh it’s stressful buying a kitchen 😳

too early for a photo.

I have a laminate, but it’s square edges and a little thinner than the traditional bull nosed edges.
I absolutely love it. Looks great. People assume it’s the expensive stuff.

Sorry I forgot to add a photo from their website.

I’ve gone dark on mine, and I love it. But it isn’t comparable to yours, as my units are also dark.

Have you had a good scroll of the worktop websites, looking for what they pair with pale units? That would give you a feel for what you prefer.

Thank you @PrizedPickledPopcorndid you choose laminate?

Wooden worktops need a lot of upkeep I think. I've got cream coloured cupboards and we went for a Colonial gold granite, basically cream background with brown and gold veins. I agree it's very stressful choosing a kitchen, I was really worried about making an expensive mistake.

I have wooden worktops and wouldn't recommend at all . And they were expensive too. I would go for quartz or granite if you can afford . Laminate not so much unless recommended .
I would also continue the porcelain up as a splashback rather than any tiles, etc . No joins mean they always look nice with no grout to clean .
Taps , etc , I would go for brass or gold coloured . Chrome is nice but I think the others will be on trend for longer . Get a scratch resistant deep sink , Quooker and waste disposal unit if you got the cash .

I got this and am really pleased with it. It’s only laminate, but I was very careful about getting the edge I wanted. People assume it’s ‘proper’.

Yes to no tiles/grout! We carried the granite up the walls as upstands and window sills and had glass on the wall rather than tiles.

I’ve got this kitchen (I think) and if it is the same I don’t recommend it. First it is always covered in fingerprints because of the way you open the cupboards. Secondly the grooves at the top are an akin to the crumb tray in a toaster. Everything ends up in there.

I have laminate that looks like granite, granite is harder to fit, obviously £££ and the floor may need reinforcement

soontobeamama · 02/06/2026 20:39

I would introduce some contrast - either the units need to be a darker shade with the light countertop, or keep the unit colour and change the worktop to a darker colour / wood which would make it feel warmer. The colour of sink should be white / cream and I would coordinate the taps with the handles - probably brushed brass for warmth if the tones are warm or chrome / stainless steel if the scheme is white.

Mine is a different colour but similar howdens, love mine, it’s 3 years old now. I have flashbacks behind the range and sink (from a flashback website) then tiles elsewhere

I agree with PP about the lack of handles, and fingermarks. I have mirrored units in my bathroom without handles and also my fridge freezer. It has become a bugbear because even though these are designed to be opened using the lower edge or inside edge I am the only one that does! Bloody finger marks all over the surfaces! My kitchen has proper handles, thankfully.😏

My only comment re worktops is this. Don't have one with a speckled pattern. You'll be the only one who notices and cleans up crumbs as apparently they cannot be seen.

We have granite (galaxy black so lots of sparkle). It's 18 years old and it will be used in our next kitchen because it's in such excellent condition still. My neighbours have wood and are on their 3rd worktop in the same time.
