Full balance on shutters before installation

Ordered shutters for my bedroom through a local blind shop. Paid 50% upfront (credit card), and they’ve just called me to say they’re ready for installation and they need the rest of the balance now before they come out. And apparently this is their policy with shutters.

I said I wasn’t happy with that. I’ve gotten blinds from this shop before and it was always balance after installation (with deposit).

she’s away to talk to the owner.

Has this been common practice for anywhere else? Seems a bit dodgy should the shutters prove to be damaged or installation done poorly.

I had shutters fitted from a Central Belt company, I paid in exactly the same way: half when ordered, half when the shutters had arrived and the company rang to arrange installation. If the shutters had been damaged the company would have rejected and reordered, so I don't think you need to worry about that. Installation - eh. I can see why you might have concerns, but if the reviews of the company you are using are excellent (TrustPilot etc.) then I'm sure it will be fine.

Same here and despite their rubbish brand name they were excellent. Great fitting and we have them in most rooms.

I don't like them but they suit some houses.

Surely if you order something online you pay the full balance upfront (e.g Amazon). What if they provided them and you didn’t pay?

OnionFishDiamond · 15/05/2026 12:43

I get what you mean.

I had to do this with Gemini worktops, pay deposit to put order through, pay full balance to book installation date.

I was a bit concerned because if there were any issues after I installation you worry if they’ll be motivated to solve the issue.

I reassured myself by putting it on my credit card rather than debit card. In the end it was all fine anyway.

We had shutter blinds provided by a local company and payment was exactly the way you describe.
Same as when we had them at our previous house.

Great comment.... how does it help regarding payment?🤔

Thanks. You look at a similar house that has them and decide they're not for you.

Use a credit card to pay the balance.

I had mine done through John Lewis and it was the same. I paid on my credit card for the insurance.
