Ceramic or induction hob

I’m not worried about getting new pans so that is one argument out of the window but I can only have electric as there’s no gas in my kitchen. I’m having a new work top as my kitchen is over 20 years old and thinking I may as well replace the hob. I have ceramic/ glass type now. But wondered about induction. More for control. What would you wise lot recommend ?

I went reluctantly from gas to induction and absolutely love it! Timers on the rings, water boiling in less than a minute, low energy use.
Only annoying thing is when the pans boil over, it turns itself off and you have to wait a minute or two to turn it back on.

Induction without a doubt. Very quick and economical. I moved house last year and am replacing the gas hob, lovely as it is, with induction next week. Cant wait- I've missed having one, disproportionately so!

Induction. We have a Bora. It’s fantastic.

If you are just getting the worktop replaced be careful of the space below the current hob. Is the oven directly under? Because induction hobs need more space between hob and oven.

Induction, I'm on my second or third. It's great. So easy to clean. Needed new pans but they weren't expensive. Safer too. Ceramic is rubbish in comparison.

Induction. Had it for almost 20 years and would never go back. (Our hob doesn't turn off if a pan boils over.) Love the speed it heats up and how quickly the durance cools after use. And so easy to clean!

I recently replaced my ceramic hob and oven and decided to stick with ceramic otherwise I'd need to get the oven housing adjusted to bring it lower to fit an induction hob. Just decided to stick with the same in the end but induction hobs are fab

I've got an induction cooktop, with oven underneath. There's not a huge space between the two. The oven is 4", max 6", from the counter top, which is needed for functionality ie using the controls.

I really like my induction cooktop. Fast water boiling. I don't have the boil over issue noted above. I quickly wipe the element and put the pot back on. Mine also has boil protect, which is meant to stop things boiling over - when you remember to turn it on that is! It seems to have better sensitivity than the glass cooktop I had. Added bonus is the top isn't hot when you finish using it. It's close to instantly cool / warm at the most. My induction cooktop is linked to my extractor (invisible) so the extractor comes on automatically and automatically adjusts as needed. You can manually adjust it to.

I've never had induction (apart from in holiday cottage stays, which was absolutely fine) but I have previously had ceramic and wouldn't recommend at all. They stay hot for a while after switching the heating off so makes it harder for space if you're cooking lots of things amd I think they seemed harder to clean.

k1233 · 13/03/2026 20:35

To help @Hobsonschoiceofhob this is the space between my oven and cooktop. It's not huge at all.

Forgot to say I also like that you can't accidentally melt something on an induction cooktop as it only works on metal.

Induction without a doubt.

MamaBobo · 13/03/2026 20:39

Induction all the way, so convenient and controllable. We had to switch from gas when we moved to a house without a gas supply. I wouldn’t go back now.

SquashPenguin · 13/03/2026 20:45

Induction all day long. Energy efficient, quick and safe.

Peekingovertheparapet · 13/03/2026 20:48

Induction for sure. Switched over in 2015 in our previous house, and replaced the gas hob in the house we live in now as soon as I could.

So induction then ?! 😂. Has anyone ever agreed THIS heartily before ?! Thanks all. No oven under it. It’s just a cupboard

Lovely kitchen ❤️. Sadly my oven was right under the worktop...
