Calling creative ones!
This is my bedroom I share with my daughter die to her additional needs (she has her own room but sleeps in with me). I need to keep the huge dominant bed for that reason. I’d like to make it a bit nicer and maybe include a dressing table- any ideas that won’t set me back much as budget is always low. The chair can go as it’s just a dumping ground as could the TV as rarely watch it. My wardrobe is in another room. TIA🤞

Oh, it’s already a nice room so you’ve got a goose base to start from.

I think:
Lose the chair and TV as you said
Nice dressing table and chair (FB marketplace?)
New / bigger artwork
Trailing plant
Nice lamp(s)

That's a lovely room even as it is.

If you are going for cosy, I'd paint the walls a deep colour- like this one.. It makes the room very warm and cosy and if you have white trim and shutters like you do, then it won't be overwhelming (our bedroom is similar with white trim). Then a couple of plants, a nice dressing table and chair, and some photos/prints on the wall.

Any ideas on budget friendly art prints for wall or where to place them? I’m not good at these things!

Is there anything you’ve seen that you already like @Receptive1? Something classic, like the Great wave of Kanagawa (sp?) / a local artist / something random that’s come up on your FB?

Apparently it’s good to have a couple of colours in the artwork used else where in the room.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 27/02/2026 08:23

I would start by painting it a nicer colour to brighten it up. Which way does the room face? Google warm colours for north facing rooms (for example) for inspiration.

FindingMeno · 27/02/2026 08:36

I'd paint the room in a lovely pink shade (include the ceiling) - a colour match for farrow and Ball calamine or setting plaster.
A dressing table where the TV and chair are. Anything will do really that's inoffensive from a chazzer.
Pick a colour to complement the pink and paint the dressing table.
Big art work/ poster taking in the pink, your 2nd colour, and a little hint of a 3rd colour.
Large plant.
Cushions or throw on the bed reflecting your colours scheme.
Long voiles to soften the windows.
Big paper lightshade ( ikea a good option)
A lamp or two.
Chazzers/ ebay/ fb marketplace are your friend.

FindingMeno · 27/02/2026 08:39

You could even see if you can get a big leaning mirror on the wall by the window, and add fairy lights and plants hanging from the ceiling if you like that vibe.

FindingMeno · 27/02/2026 08:42

And look out for a rug that complements the scheme.
I think that would all look cosy yet still light, and have a relaxing and feminine feel.

Ahhhh I love all these suggestions!

The range if you have one, their prints are really well priced and sometimes if theres only 1 left they reduce it right down. I would also say there for lamps.

I have my room in greys, pinks and rose gold accessories.

The Malm range from Ikea is very well priced too, their drawers are large and sturdy, I have 2 of the grey three drawer units either side of the bed (think they are 80cm wide each but they do smaller), they look really smart. I also got a lovely fake fur grey rug from there too for next to the bed.

I also have a display cabinet from the range on the wall which I keep perfumes in

Rather than making specific suggestions, I’d suggest that you take a bit of time to work out what YOU like, because taste is so personal.

Go to the newsagent & get a few home decoration magazines - the sort that showcase improbably lovely homes 😭. Country Homes, English Country Homes etc. (Focus on the magazines that show pictures of actual homes, not just ideas and adverts.) Then sit down with a cup of tea & some glue and scissors and a scrap book. Flick through the magazines & whenever you see something you like, cut it out and stick it in the book. It could be a room, a colour, whatever. At the end flick through your pictures and think about what makes you like them. Is there anything they have in common? Colours? Are you going for rich or light colours? Single colours or mixed? Patterns? The way colours are repeated through the rooms? Types of furniture? That helps you to see what YOU like which may be completely different from what others like. I mean some people like single small pictures in a wall, others one big picture, others a mix. We’re all different.

Also worth thinking - when someone comes into the room, to what part of it do you want their eye to be drawn? (I usually think the opposite area of the room from the door, to make it seem bigger, but you might prefer elsewhere). How could you draw the eye there - a colour, a big picture, a big plant? A mirror? How does the eye get drawn to certain areas in the pictures you liked?

Another thing I find useful is material samples. Clarke & Clarke do a velvet called Alvar which comes in loads of colours. You can get small samples from a website for £1 each (first 5 free). If you get say 10 of these it’s really helpful in thinking about what colours you like and how they look in your room (whether or not you actually want to buy any material!).

You can also of course get paint samples to try out colours but they work out more expensive. I have used the F&B pre-painted sheets before but they are £3 each and inevitably I end up hating most of them.

Thing is that if it were me I might well do something like paint your room a dark rich brown with red and lilac somewhere - but that’s because I find those colours soothing in a bedroom. Others may well hate them! So I would try to work out first what you like.

It’s such a nice shaped and well lit room, I hope you enjoy decorating it!

Can you get to a homesense (or to maxx) they’re great for bits and bobs. The do well priced rugs, really unusual mirrors, a cute shelf for a couple of plants, they do lovely plant pots. Or look on sostrene Greene website. So many lovely and very well priced accessories.

onelumporthree · 28/02/2026 19:35

As a pp says, The Range is really good for budget artwork and other accessories.

Receptive1 · 28/02/2026 21:35

Thank you! I have a rare day off next week and there is a range not too far from me so I’ll head there! Thank you so much
