Help My Kitchen Is Just Awful

Just that really, and do you have any advice please?
We have autistic twins who have run riot on this kitchen since we moved in (it was old then and ready for an update, but intact). It hasn't been too difficult for them to remove doors etc...
We obviously need to replace it but, my husband is right to say it's not worth it yet as they are only 4 and more damage could follow.

I looked into replacement doors but they are half the price of a new kitchen and so not cheap either. Could I block off the missing doors and paint it? Would that look better. I hate that we don't have a lot of room to put things away and they have to be put on the tops. Not used to living in disrepair and mess!

How about making a little curtains with a tension rod over the gap?

Soontobe60 · 19/02/2026 19:04

Can you install some wall cabinets? Also, use storage boxes that fit in the door less cupboards. Put a stair gate on the kitchen door too.

Buy new doors and fit those safety latches so they cant open them?

My thoughts exactly!

You could also just repaint the cupboards to make them look fresher.

If you can be bothered, you could wrap the counter tops in some vinyl.

Storage wise you could put some racks on the walls for cups and plates to free up cupboard space or get some baskets for your counter tops so the mess is at least contained

Mine are the same. I got some thick table covering (plastic) off a roll in a local DIY shop, cut it to size and staple gunned it on! Not the greatest look but better than open with contents on show and the kittens can't climb it!

I don't mean to sound rude, but give the doors and visible cupboard insides a good scrub with something like jif/cif or pink stuff. They'll look much better for it. Then as others have said, I'd go for bistro style curtains and/or nice wicker storage baskets.

I'd vinyl wrap the worktops (get extra to keep and do it in sections so you can replace parts if needed). Paint the cupboards and I agree with storage baskets and the curtain on a tension rod over the gap. I'd give them somewhere specific in the kitchen like a white board or similar where they can put their art.

Some great ideas thank you x

Is there such thing as a cupboard paint that is shiny as I will need to be able to wipe them clean or else in no time I will be back to square one?

Do you have enough space to take out a few units and replace with a full height cupboard which can be locked? Almost like a larder unit.

crumpet · 20/02/2026 08:46

You could get a carpenter in to build one with really solid doors and hinges

Smallorveryfaraway · 20/02/2026 11:38

What happened to the doors they took off? I would paint them all and put them back on, then use those child safe closers so they can't open them again. Lots of other good ideas above too.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 20/02/2026 12:09

Yes, just buy new hinges and put the old doors back on. Then you can paint them all if you like.

Touty · 21/02/2026 09:23

I painted my old dated kitchen doors with Valspar paint, they look amazing now.

Pancakesbythedozen · 21/02/2026 09:32

Fill in the holes inside the cabinet. Paint and use some nice baskets. Could you offer up 1 cupboard for toys /play kitchen food and maybe they'll leave the rest alone?
*asd ds but he only breaks TVs...
