Putting in an internal window

We live in an extended two up two down terrace. You currently walk in through the front door into a square shape of a hall and then open the door to our extended L shaped dining and kitchen area. The dining area feels narrow and hall like.

To improve this. And to reduce clutter in this area. I want to create a proper hall. So we’ll remove the door to the dining area and put in an interior wall just before the dining table.

This will reduce the light considerably. So I’m thinking of putting an interior window in the wall. I’d like a specific size of a window that frames around a mature tree that grows in front of our house.

Has anyone done anything similar. This just isn’t anything I’ve seen and I am having trouble convincing DH.

I need a diagram, sorry

internal windows look very strange and are normally left over from bodged extensions so it would be very odd deliberately putting one in to “remove clutter” 🤔

I would go to an architect and get advice.

Yes we did this after adding a side extension, purely because it would have been very dark to block the original hole. An internal window has to be fire safety glass though. We added a removable stained glass pane and it looks beautiful when the sun shines through.

It is an original arched window in a very old house and it has character.

If you could add a floor plan or diagram that might help people advise you better @Dagda 😉

I did this by inserting a round window to get extra light into a corridor where previously there had been a door in that space. The rest of the door space was blocked up and plastered. It looks great. Art Deco style!

It can look fantastic…or very naff. Can you put up a mirror or masking tape or something as a mock up to help convince your husband?.

Love the idea of a round window.

My DD has an internal window from her kitchen onto her hall. It is an old Victorian house and the window is original. It looks lovely and lets a lot of light into the hall.

Round windows are lovely @Mosaic123 !
I forgot that we also have one (a reclaimed period type) that we bought for a porch we were going to add at the back of our Georgian cottage. I don't think we'll do that now as we plan to sell next year, but DH suggested we use it internally instead and this thread has reminded me to dig it out from the garage tomorrow 😉
