Which bedroom carpet? Does anyone have Westex?

It’s my first time buying a new carpet for our bedroom and I’m getting mixed advice over what type to buy. I wanted something that felt plush and soft (like how they feel when a new build is first done) but also so that they will last and not quickly go flat or threadbare, as once the carpets are down we’re putting a large freestanding wardrobe in there that’ll be difficult to move, so don’t want to need new carpets again for a long time.

First two carpet shops said a 80/20 wool carpet was the best for quality and long lasting, the third shop said go for a thicker polypropylene as anything containing wool will be a nightmare with kids (they’re not that often in our room but of course they would go in sometimes so there’s always a chance a stain could happen).

At first I wasn’t too keen on the texture of the 80/20 wool carpets as felt fairly corse but then I felt a Westex one that felt lovely and was told they’re top of the range,
so was tempted if it would stay that soft as I loved the colour as well, however a quick google of some of their reviews put me off a bit. I like the feel of the polypropylene ones more than the standard 80/20 wool but then have been told they may flatten quite quickly.

Happy to invest in a thick underlay to go underneath whatever we decide, just don’t want to make the wrong carpet choice as needs to last us a long time!

I have Westex Ultima carpet on the stairs and upstairs hallway and bedrooms, and I am really happy with it, would choose it again.

It’s been down for about 18 months and I think it still looks pretty much as new. For example if I move my bed and hoover, there’s not much difference between the never-walked on carpet and the spot I stand on every time I get in or out of bed.

After a lot of floorplan Tetris, I was able to do the space quite cheaply using various offcuts. They’re all in the same colour but three different grades: Crest, Ultima and Pinnacle. The Pinnacle does feel a bit more luxe (it’s higher density) but it’s all really nice.

I don’t think you’re wrong that rubbing your fingers over a sample feels a bit rough. But when it’s on the floor and you’re walking on it, I think what you notice more is the feeling of the floor being springy underneath your foot, it certainly doesn’t feel rough to my bare feet.

I’ve had a couple of stains that I needed to scrub at a bit (black paint!) and I can’t see a difference in the pile or colour.

The Westex carpet replaced a cheap polypropylene which was laid in 2011 and had basically become completely flattened in high traffic areas.

If you’re just doing one room and don’t mind sourcing your own fitter, it is worth checking out the remnants on a website called Designer Carpet. Had such great service from them so I always recommend

Thanks for your reply, turns out the carpet I really liked was part of the Westex Silken Velvet so is Nylon rather than an 80/20 wool mix like I thought they’d said in the shop. Sounds like Nylon carpets are still less likely to crush than the polypropylene carpets I’d been recommended elsewhere though.

Good to know you’d found the Westex carpets to be high quality, I’d hate to spend a lot of money for them to be disappointing! Thanks for the recommendation, I had a look at Designer Carpets and unfortunately it doesn’t look like the remnants I need are quite big enough in the colour I liked (Glacier) but will keep checking though. Although I’m also a bit worried I might measure up wrong, so may go through a shop anyway to have them measure up and supply a fitter as part of the job, as finding tradespeople in general seems a bit of a challenge when you’re doing it alone!

I bought Westex Ultima for my home office, it’s 80/20 and replaced a polypropylene carpet that was in very poor condition after 8 years. The new carpet is lovely, very obviously better quality and looks like new after 6 months. I got a room remnant from Designer Carpets, it’s a small room which cost me £150 including underlay and fitting! I had been quoted £350 from a carpet supply shop for polypropylene again - so my buy was much cheaper for a really good carpet. I’m replacing the hall, stairs and landing next which will be around £500 with Designer Carpets, quoted £900 from a carpet shop.

@Carpetcry88 Couldn't resist looking at the Velvet Silken Glacier - so chic, bet it would be absolutely lovely!
