Don’t know where to start with upstairs carpets

Help! I haven’t a clue how to approach re-carpeting our upstairs. Three bed, not large 1960s semi. The priority is the stairs themselves but do I have to do the whole upstairs? (Currently it’s all the same) Or can the bedrooms be different? Will it look too much like patchwork if all the rooms are different?
such a basic question but I just don’t know where to start.
thanks.

Bedrooms can be different . You wouldn’t know anyway as doors are closed ?

start by deciding your colour . Then your budget . Don’t forget underlay and door threshold strips all add to the cost .

I use the carpet shop Tapi .. they do a free measure up and fitting etc
but you can look online or round any large store to get an idea of what you want .

Another vote for Tapi here…we’ve just used them for our stairs and landings carpet and they were excellent.

The only place we have carpet is on our stairs and landings (three storey house), all the rest are hard floors and it looks fine with the bedrooms different to the stairs. The saleswoman at Tapi was really helpful in advising which kind of carpet best suits stairs as you need it to be quite hard wearing. We’re very pleased with ours.

Rooms can be different to the landing (in my opinion!)
Unless you are loaded and ok to redo the carpet before it has worn out then stick with neutral colours. In particular, i would avoid pink for a girls room. It can seem like a dream now, but when they get older they can really turn against it!
Stick with a neutral carpet and çhange colour using the soft furnishings.

Bedrooms can be different.

You don't need the same hard-wearing carpet in the bedrooms as you do on the stairs.

You can do one room at a time, otherwise it is overwhelming to clear the rooms.

Another vote for Tapi - we got a new living room carpet from them just before Christmas.

Definitely shop around. My recent experience with tapi has not been good. Used them fir the loft extension (3 rooms) and 2 bedrooms (so 5 rooms total). When I came to get the hall stairs landing done over 2 levels they have been useless and not the cheapest. It's like they CBA with getting a decent price for us and they keep mixing up what is included in the quote so we've had to be very on the ball correcting them.

We've now used local carpet shop the landing and stairs carpet is different and the bedrooms are different but some are the same.

TortoiseEnthusiast · 28/01/2026 05:47

We've got hard floors upstairs and just carpet on the actual stairs. That works really well.

All mine are slightly different but the same wool Berber and a similar shade. I buy end of lines and off cuts and change carpets every time I redecorate so it would be too much upheaval to do it all at once in a four bed house. Because they are all a similar shade, it’s not obvious they are slightly different.

FruAashild · 28/01/2026 05:56

I think it depends on your house. Our first floor landing is tiny and the stairs and the bedrooms have (different) beige carpets. I hate that there are so many neutrals that are all slightly different so close together, it stops them being 'neutral'. Plan is to remove all the carpets and (most likely) stain the floorboards one colour and have large rugs in the bedrooms and a runner on the stairs. In our last house we had different flooring in each room upstairs but because the landing was much larger and they were properly different it was fine.

IceIceSlippyIce · 28/01/2026 06:57

Dont rule out using a tiny independent shop. The frontage may have been small, but the one we used was still stashed with samples, and an incredibly knowledgeable owner. Ther is a limited torture number of greige samples you can look at!!

Also consider if they will split the fitting over 2 days - the rooms will need to be empty to fit carpet. We did all bedrooms and livingroom. 2 beds day 1 - with all furniture in bed 3, then the other 2 rooms the following day. We couldn't have done it all at once as there was nowhere for the furniture!

Another vote for using a local independent carpet shop , had a terrible experience with Tapi and would not recommend them
We had laminate in some of the bedrooms ( DS had asthma ) and carpet on stairs and landing , it doesn’t have to all match
We now live in a bungalow , and have a real patchwork of different carpets and wooden floors , it’s fine

PersephoneParlormaid · 28/01/2026 07:07

We also used Tapi and they recommended hard wearing on the stairs and different in the bedrooms.

Ketryne · 28/01/2026 08:23

Just on the Tapi/not Tapi debate. We used them for a small bedroom and the person in the showroom was really helpful, showing us some cheaper off cuts that would fit to get us a better deal than buying from the main section. However, when I was getting quotes for our large landing and stairs, their prices were eye-wateringly high. I did want a high end herringbone style texture but when I got a local independent to quote they were literally about half the price. Tapi use independent fitters and you have to pay for those on top, whereas this is all included with most local companies and works out better value.

For stairs, I’d be careful about getting anything too thick and luxurious as you’ll see the wear marks where people walk up and down really obviously (that’s what our old one was like) but you’ll probably want something softer in the bedrooms. If you’re worried about patchwork, you could try a neutral colour with a different texture/pattern for the main hallway (loop pile/herringbone, subtle stripe in the pile) then go for the same neutral in a more traditional pile for the bedrooms.

crumpet · 28/01/2026 08:37

One thing to check is whether taking away and disposing of your old carpet is included in the price - don’t just assume it will be

canidigityes · 28/01/2026 08:43

Personally I don’t like patchwork carpet colours - colours should flow. So if you are doing one area then I’d do them all budget allowing

museumum · 28/01/2026 14:43

Thank you all. I feel a bit more informed now even though you’ve all said different things. We have a Tapi and a couple of local shops in east distance so I think I need to start browsing.
whoever says about a torture number of neutrals was right - it’s tedious.
