What colour carpet?

I'm just about to move from a 250 year old house to a new build and for the first time I'm going to have to buy carpets. I am useless with home decor (nothing much was planned in the current house, it just sort of happened). We exchange next week and I need to order the carpets - and I don't know what to choose. Everyone says grey is now dated, so what do I go for? I don't like beige, cream is ridiculous for me as I have two dogs, and I couldn't bear bold colours like red...but I want it to look lovely! No carpets needed for downstairs as there is wood flooring there, but the stairs and bedrooms - I have no idea! Help please?!?!?

Caramel.

Don't get a plain solid colour, get a flecked design, much more forgiving for any stains or marks. Won't show every little bit of debris that lands on it either

My favourite colour is blue, so I have pale blue carpets. My bedding is cream and my curtains are in this material.

What colour carpet?

What colour are your dogs?!! That is the colour you should buy 😁

If they are multicoloured get a tweed carpet with multiple spots colours. Looks more or less one colour from a distance but hides dog hair and stains much better than single colour.

Also, grey walls are definitely not on trend (though if you like them who cares) but I haven't heard anyone moaning about grey carpets. They are just practical surely? If you care about matching stuff though, you also need to consider the colour of any furniture you already have.

That Instagram influencer every-last-thing-shall-be-grey look is dated for sure, but grey carpet can still look lovely, in my opinion, and as mentioned above it’s practical.

And agree with previous comments about flecked being a good option - there are some really nice Berber carpets, many would fall into the beige filter but still worth a look as beige covers a huge range of shades?

Good luck with the move!

If you like warm colours, then I'd suggest a porridge coloured carpet that has flecks of lighter and darker colours in it. They come in lighter and darker background colours. They are forgiving in terms of stuff not showing up on them

For your situation (dogs + wanting something modern), I’d go for a mid-tone neutral like greige or taupe in a durable twist pile. It won’t show marks as much as cream but still looks fresh and not dated like old greys.

You can check out carpets-online.co.uk/ they have a wide range of affordable carpets and you can order samples to see what works in your home.

We have grey carpets. Grey goes with everything so we never have to worry about replacing the carpets just to go with a room colour scheme change. We also have grey herringbone in the kitchen, hallway and bathroom

Overtheatlantic · 09/04/2026 07:46

@TeddyBeans I love your name!

I had just decided on dark blue for the upstairs, with a black cat, but now I’m wondering if I should consider something with flecks.

TeddyBeans · 09/04/2026 08:03

Personally I don't like the look of flecked carpets but can see the appeal with pets! Can you get a dark blue carpet with flecks?

TheGirlattheBack · 11/04/2026 14:11

If you like grey have grey, presumably you’re going to be in your house for a long time so you should go with what you love.

Before the all grey house trend, grey was a background neutral and it still can be as long as you don’t go grey furniture and bedding and window treatments it will look lovely. Silver grey is a classic choice.

Fill your home with what you like/love and it will make you happy.

dudsville · 11/04/2026 14:16

Yup, flecked dog colour.

TommorrowsToday · 11/04/2026 14:19

I personally dislike flecked carpet, it looks bitty even when it's clean. I'd go for a warm, light, caramel in a dense (not high/thick) pile, so that it gets those lovely vacuum lines when you hoover.

I also love the look of navy carpet, but it shows up white fluff like nothing else.

Ohhh I’ve not got the hang of mumsnet, and finding replies, and answering. So sorry as it looks as if i ignored you all, and I didn’t even see you’d replied.
My dogs don’t shed…. But they come in covered in mud…So I chose a nice greige carpet, and the friend who came with me called out to the worker the name of my carpet, and he said ‘Got it!’ and wrote it down.
Yesterday i went to look at the house, and the fitters were there, fitting a dull grey carpet. I immediately said ‘That’s not what I ordered!’ I didn’t want grey, and if I’d wanted grey, I’d never have chosen that one!
So I took my friend back to the carpet shop…and we worked out that she’d called out the wrong name. Not my nice greige but a very dark dull grey.

So…there was nothing I could do… but it was a good lesson in not swearing or throwing a tantrum…and telling myself that some things just don’t fucking matter. I mean, no one died. And I’ve got a house, and a carpet…. So i need to shut the fuck up

TeddyBeans · 07/05/2026 06:48

Oh no that's so disappointing! I'm sorry you didn't get the carpet you'd expected. Could you sell it to recoup some of the funds and get a refit?
