Would you live in an apartment like this?

I’m thinking of temporarily relocating for a year to study a masters, then move back to my house.

I found an apartment which looks great, modern, decently priced. However it is a top floor “penthouse”/loft, with very deeply slanted ceilings, possibly only one straight/full length wall per room. How much of a dealbreaker is this for you?

to help you visualise, the galley kitchen has both side walls deeply slanted to where you can’t fit kitchen cabinets up on the wall. Joining the two rows of counters is a doorway into a utility room, so there is a place for extra storage.

this isn’t the same apartment, just a photo I found online to illustrate

For a year, I’d take anything affordable, averagely pleasant and conveniently located for the university.

It's a bit claustrophobic, but to rent for a year I could put up with it if it was well located and well priced. It's just a base really isn't it? It doesn't he's to be a wonderful home, just somewhere to eat/sleep/shower.

I’d just want to make sure there’s decent escape routes through windows and safety stairs in the event of a fire.

It’s on the 3rd floor, there’s stairs but I doubt window exit is viable. Most of the windows seem to be skylights given the structure

I’ve never lived anywhere like this, I don’t know how jarring the walls might be. For example there won’t be much clearance for bookcases etc.

I reckon if it wasn’t for the sloped ceilings, the apartment would cost twice the amount. It’s otherwise quite large and spacious but I’m not sure how much of that space can be used!

Do you and/or partner hit your heads on the ceilings?
Are you bend over waking from room to room? If no, then for 1yr, yes I'd do it!
It will likely be hot being in the loft/penthouse so invest in some good fans or an air con unit.

Pryceosh1987 · 25/01/2026 00:48

If it is a temporary fix perhaps. It doesnt look good as something permenant. I assume the cost is very nice and good value.

Echobelly · 25/01/2026 00:50

For temporary I'd take it - not otherwise as it's hard to have bookshelves or hang pictures. I was put off a house where all the upper storey was like that for just that reason.

Would you feel a bit cut off not being able to see out of the windows, apart from sky?

InMyOodie · 25/01/2026 00:56

Do you have no standard windows with a view out? Just roof lights?

JanuaryJasmine · 25/01/2026 00:57

Yes, of course I would. I would (& have chosen) the cheapest, safe, location appropriate accommodation I could find for a year. WGAF if the walls are sloping? For a year you need to prioritise a safe place to live that's near things you can enjoy. Not bookcase that go to ceilings & whatnot.

This. I get low if I cant connect to the outside world in some way (not just the sky!)

ThrowingDi · 26/01/2026 13:30

Well it’s about £1400 a month for 1000 square foot, 2 bedroom 2 bathroom. I don’t have the exact listing to share as it’s not online, but it’s near Cambridge. I called the lettings agent today and it seems they have already had some applications so it might be a moot point overall! But she said she would arrange a viewing…

It’s a good question but from what I understand all exterior walls are on a sloped angle so I think the skylight windows are the only ones. But again I haven’t seen it in person to confirm.
