Oh my goodness, so many things! I hadn’t considered that the tiles I saw in artificial light in the showroom would look very different in a room with daylight, and was disappointed they weren’t as nice as I thought. The tiler wanted to use a cheap and nasty metal strip to edge the tiles, and the proper finish that I wanted instead cost more. The recommended 10% extra tiles needed to allow for wastage from cutting turned out not to be quite enough, as there were some odd shapes and corners which required more cutting and led to more wastage. I should have allowed
More like 20%. I’d managed to get the tiles cheaply in clearance, but then couldn’t get any more as they had sold out, so now I have a strip of tiles missing on one wall, and either have to put in something that doesn’t match, leave the tiles missing (it looks awful and depresses me every time I go in there), or redo the lot, which is not going to happen any time soon! I had textured tiles before, which were impossible to get properly clean, these are at least smooth. It has all cost more and been harder than expected, and the result is just miserable. The expensive taps broke, which led to another plumber visit being paid for to replace them, and I tried get a refund from the company I bought them from but no joy. I went for a coloured grout because it looked so lovely in my friends bathroom. It does not look lovely in mine! I think it’s one of those things that you can enjoy in someone else’s house, but actually living with it daily is very different if that makes sense? Oh, and it turns out I can’t have a shower screen like I wanted (no room for a walk in shower alas), because the sink is in the way and so the screen wouldn’t be able to be opened. I could have had the sink moved when the work started had I realised, but it’s too late now. What’s really annoying is that the guys doing the bathroom knew what I wanted, and at no point said, you know, this won’t work unless you do that, or you need to consider x, y, and z. I expect professionals in any field to actually communicate with their clients, and explain the things their client needs to know, but no chance! Anyway, good luck! It was all quite traumatic, and I’ve been living with a messed up bathroom for four years now as had to go part time at work and can no longer afford to get it fixed.
