Pic below - ignore the twiggy heart - that’s just temporary!

Could you have a mirror? Maybe one of those round, pothole style, ones.

RedToothBrush · 03/01/2026 18:00

Three ducks. Obviously.

Or a fish.

There’s a mirror on the opposite wall

possibly but think I’d prop it up on the mantel rather then hang.

Serious question - is that wood stacked under your burner? I mention this because we used to stack our wood either side of our burner (not touching it). However, one day I came home from the school run and the stack had fallen against the burner, embers had caught alight and the whole house was completely filled with smoke. If I’d not come straight home, the house would have undoubtedly burnt down. Your wood looks close enough so that if it got hot enough inside the burner, that display wood could catch? Thought I’d mention it as the awareness could potentially save your life!

Edited for clarity.

A stag's head (faux or real, according to taste)

I like the twiggy heart ❤️!!

@Annella I wondered that too, but concluded it's probably a metal platform specifically made to store logs.

We have a Charnwood stove like thishttps://www.directstoves.com/charnwood-c-four-blu-defra-approved-stove.html?infinity=ict2~net~gaw~ar~~kw~~mt~~cmp~21400526137~ag~&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21396472454&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgvPKBhCxARIsAOlK_ErawBhQOIx0NhcIZN_1gSrmUX_csnuumIKITtbTO5jt8D4vICaTASwaAiUxEALw_wcB and chose one with a log store beneath as we'd already had this type fitted at our last house.

It's perfectly safe, although having previously had a chimney fire caused by an ancient wood burner fitted by the previous owners at a different (thatched!) house, we don't like to take risks either, so totally get your concern!

Hopefully @Jungfraujoch will come back and reassure us....

I have one of these in my hallway 😁
There's a lenticular Dr Who picture hanging over my woodburner - K9 and a Dalek - but I appreciate that's not to everyone's taste!

Brittany Ferguson is a Scottish landscape artist who specialises in watercolour and she has some stunning work. Perhaps a couple of her pieces side by side would do the trick, bringing subtle colour and original art to your room.

SliceofTosst · 06/01/2026 20:42

I think some metal wall art would suit perfectly up there.

Hop garland?

waltzingparrot · 06/01/2026 22:17

Huge piece of driftwood

AnOldCynic · 06/01/2026 22:20

Personally I wouldn’t have anything. The brickwork is nice and it balances out the decorations on the floor/around the stove.

Pumpkinpuffin · 06/01/2026 22:42

A wrought iron or old wooden something to compliment the traditional herringbone brickwork. Maybe a Victorian yoke or farm tool. If you prefer more modern, an iron skeleton clock dial.

S0T1RED · 07/01/2026 23:05

It’s beautiful. I don’t think I’d put anytime above it (where the heart is, though I do like the heart!). Have you thought about putting something on the wall in the alcove behind the burner, one either side of the flue? You could have candle sconces or portrait / vertical pictures.

Where is the white pot that your pinecones are in from please? 🥰

I get your concern - tbh it was left there by previous owners - just decorative. But the fire is never on when the house is empty.

Thank you- candle sconces at the back is a nice idea. The artichoke dish was a present - I think from Oka.

Yes it is a thick iron platform!
