Would a table and chairs take up too much space room?

We live in a small house, our kitchen is a nice size but due to the counter being u shaped it does take up most of the room, we have stools to go against the counter for meals, however with DD getting older I really would like a table and chairs (no room in my lounge and don’t have a dining room), this is the most similar photo of my kitchen I can find, except the breakfast bar is longer so the only space is behind it, its the same width as our kitchen. I was thinking a smallish rectangular table pushed up against the wall, would this be silly and make it too cluttered? I have a tendency of getting ideas into my head and it not turning out good.

Can you get rid of the breakfast bar? If it’s your only barrier to a proper dining table, it’s pointless keeping it.

Is the breakfast bar in your kitchen the same as the photo? (so not cupboards underneath)

You could remove it if so and create more space for a table?

Our friends have a small kitchen, they have a rectangular table with a bench at one side and chairs at the other, so they can push it against the wall when it’s not being used and hide the bench under it so it doesn’t take up space, that seems to work well!

No, I’m renting so no changes can be made, also it’s not open, there are cupboards under too

You could fit a small table with drop down bits that could extend? Have two chairs and then another two folding chairs when you need it?

I had a circular drop-leaf table pushed up against the least-used cupboard in a tiny kitchen. When dc1 was big enough to sit at the table we kept one drop side pressed up against the cupboard and lifted the other leaf. When dc2 came along, we stuck with the ‘3-sided’ table as we were mostly max 3 people eating at one time. We only pulled it out all the way at weekends, when dh was also at home.

I think round may be better in restricted spaces as you don’t have corners to bash into.

I’ll see if I can find something similar to link.

There's an ikea one that folds out each side and is really slim when not extended
I'd push that up against the breakfast bar or space against the wall or something 🤔
I don't think having meals etc at the breakfast bar is that bad if that's all you have room for

A small table shouldn’t be a semi-circle when folded, as that would not allow the people to sit comfortably. It also should not have a gate leg supporting any of the flaps, as that would not allow the person sitting at that side to sit comfortably.
