Help needed with a cheap makeover for a dated bathroom.

Just about to sign on a property. The bathroom is dated but ok, we may update in 2 or 3 years time. It is quite small with toilet basin and large walk in shower. The issue is the tiles it is tiled floor to ceiling in beige tiles. Does anyone have any inspiring ideas. I was debating accessories in black or maybe chunky wood mirror and shelves, but really not sure, we will be putting in a new floor.

Would you consider painting over the tiles if they’re sound? Even if you just do the ones inside the shower enclosure - a dark navy or sage green maybe? - it will break up the beige and you can add towels to match.

Possibly I have painted tiles before but think I would have to do them all if I did.

Personally I find beige okay. A dark floor, the ceiling not bright white but something a bit like Farrow and Ball Skimming Stone, black and silver accessories, so altogether a beige/silver/black or dark brown scheme, with white towels, could look quite sophisticated. I have painted tiles and it looked fine but mine were brown with a floral pattern!

Wooden/bamboo duckboard to cover up some of the floor? I think wood is quite good for offsetting beige, and plants / greenery.

Black accessories may be too much of a contrast and inadvertently draw more attention. We had a beige dated bathroom in a previous flat with a black tiled floor (awful, never ever looked clean as we have hard water so even when just mopped it looked bad) and I think the contrast made both elements look worse.

I'd probably add some art/ paint the upper part of the walls (if not fully tiled) to draw the eye up from the floor.

Can you add a photo?

It's fully tiled to the ceiling. I was thinking maybe scaffold board shelves above the loo and a chunky rustic mirror might help

I think I'd just go white to try to de-beige it. Beige and taupes etc are coming back in fashion but these tiles look dark and gloomy so I'd be aiming to lighten it up. Plants would help as well.

Yes I have nice white towels and some nice faux plants, what do you think for window dressing?

White wood Venetian blinds or a white roller blind? I'd keep it simple if you're not in love with it.

I wouldn't add black or dark accessories. Pale wood/bamboo accessories (actual wood or bamboo, not MDF etc).
Change the mirror to something more interesting -vintage or pale wooden frame. Lots of houseplants. Maybe a hanging basket or two?
Change the flooring to something lighter
Windows - Wooden/bamboo blinds, linen Roman blind or maybe some muslin to diffuse the light?
Fluffy pale towels or hammam style.

Do not add black to this room.

I don’t really see the huge issue with the current state of it. It’s not a 60s avocado green suite. It’s just a run of the mill standard bathroom.

If you want to add something to it get yourself a nice bath mat and towels, soap dispenser and toothbrush holder and put some nice potted plants on the windowsill.

Definitely plants, white and dark green towels and a wooden splash board if there is space (had one briefly but had to keep standing it against the wall where it slid down frequently.) Maybe a mirrored cabinet? Tbh I like it now!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Having seen the photo I agree that black isn’t the answer. White, taupe, natural materials and plants is the way to go. I was visualising old style shiny square tiles.
