How to handle deliveries of logs for log burner

Claryfee · 21/11/2025 19:50

Sorry if I posted in the wrong place.

Issue is I can't physically deal with a tonne of logs being delivered and dumped outside my house needing carrying into the wood store in the back garden. Have no one to help with this.

My idea is to get much small bags delivered (not the tiny bag with 6 logs in) and ask delivery person to put them in my hallway then I'll gradually use them up. Anyone have smaller bags delivered that are more manageable?

Homefire are brilliant, and you can get a subscription so I get large 10 net bags a month and a few kindling bags. Very easy to manage.

Noname20 · 21/11/2025 19:57

We have the large bulk bag for our log burner and tbh depending on how much you use your burner you may find it a lot more expensive buying the smaller bags ( we wheelbarrow around from the from to our log shed - do you have any local teenagers (or their parents that you could approach to move toga for you for some pocket money) if you have a disability that means that you would struggle with a bulk bag maybe have a word with the company as they normally put them on a dolly and may be happy to take them further into then into the house - a hallway drop off would annoy the absolute life out of me

Justdancinginthedark · 21/11/2025 19:58

Give the company a call and ask that they be delivered to the log store. You might be charged or they could do it as a gesture of goodwill.

That sounds just what I need. Could you advise which bags you buy, please. There's the large handy bag at £22.95 or a netted bag at £9.95. Difficult to tell how large these bag are from the pics. They're both kiln dried logs.

Many thanks

Whilst we are able to move logs from the drive to the woodshed, we found one of these more helpful than a wheelbarrow Utility cart. I would echo what others have said and ask your supplier if they are able to move the logs for you or pay for some assistance. Buying logs by the bag often works out more expensive and we have found that "kiln dried" logs burn far too fast and prefer to buy seasoned wood instead. Being very health and safety minded I would be concerned that wood in a hallway presents a fire risk and blocks your exit to your escape route in the case of fire.

Could you pay someone to move a larger delivery for you? Maybe a local teenager? My son would very happily help with something like this for a bit of pocket money.

FateAmenableToChange · 21/11/2025 21:44

I get 10 of these a month and it works for me and 4 little bags of kindling. I don't use it every day though, maybe 3/4 times a week. The net bags are large but liftable and they're very good about carrying them in and putting them wherever you want.

I have an issue with my spine and find the tonne log dump difficult. On Amazon you can get decent sized boxes of logs delivered that are easier to manage.

notapizzaeater · 21/11/2025 23:57

We’ve lots of log companies round here (rural) and 2 of them offer a stacking service - it’s about £15

SkankingWombat · 22/11/2025 00:00

Not all companies just dump a pile/pallet on your drive. Our local log company delivers in tightly packed huge sacks (similar to a tonne bag that aggregates come in, but taller and narrower) they call barrow bags. They wheel them to your log store on a sack barrow, load the full bags into the store, and take the last delivery's empty bags away with them to reuse.
If no company nearby offers this, I'd try asking around your neighbours to see if anyone has an older DC/teen who fancies earning a few quid. My 11yo would bite your hand off if offered, and I know a good few local teens who regularly do these sorts of odd jobs for older villagers.

Whereabouts are you?

We order from this Social Enterprise and they always stack them in our woodshed

May be worth looking to see if anything similar near you if you are not in NE England

The Woodfuel Centre - Ready to Burn certified woodfuel products - logs, kindling etc

The Woodfuel Centre is a (CIC) and social care day service which produces Ready to Burn woodfuel products such as logs and kindling.

Have you looked at LoveLogs? They deliver manageable sized boxes of firewood and the quality is amazing. Cardboard boxes, no plastic net bags etc. We use their heat log briqs too and they last an astonishing amount of time.

Seconding the pp that said look around for other suppliers, my current one backs his van up to my garage and unloads the wood from small bags into a larger one for me, I don't have to do anything except open the garage door.
I then load up a few small manageable stacking crates which go into my porch, refilling from the big bag in the garage when needed.

WittyJadeStork · 22/11/2025 11:36

You need a smaller local supplier.
pressed post too soon
as they will usually stack them for you as well
it will mostly be seasoned logs rather than kiln dried

DeafLeppard · 22/11/2025 11:43

This sounds like a shilling thread for home fire:/ Can’t you chuck £20 at a local teenager?

Elektra1 · 22/11/2025 11:52

Buying in smaller bags is more expensive by quite a considerable margin. Can you pay a local teen £20 to come and stack a load for you?

Cheersmedears123 · 22/11/2025 22:15

We use two local suppliers - one will literally dump a truck load of logs outside our garage which DH and DS stack up. The other (which is slightly more expensive) delivers in nets. It’s much easier to bring into the house. For the loose logs we load up those big blue ikea bags to bring them into the house, but stacking them does take a lot of time. If I didn’t have DH I would just order the nets and take the hit on the cost.
