Sink grooves??

We are having our new kitchen installed within the next few weeks and when the quartz worktops are fitted we have the option of sink/drainer grooves.
Please can anyone who has them let me know the pros and cons to help us decide. TIA 😁

Personally, I prefer not to have them. But I don’t think there are any significant pro or cons either way. I don’t think it makes much difference

GooseyGandalf · 10/11/2025 21:54

I was told they would stain more easily.

ShenandoahRiver · 10/11/2025 21:56

We have had them for 7 years now, no problems and no staining.

Geneticsbunny · 10/11/2025 22:02

If they arent slanted towards the the sink, they won't drain properly and will be almost pointless. You can buy ones which sit on top of the worktop if you decide you want one later.

Getoffofmyland · 10/11/2025 22:04

We have them but as we have a dishwasher they are just for show really, no problems with staining (quartz) if we do wash up we use a drainer pad to soak up the water

JennyWreny · 11/11/2025 23:12

We didn't have grooves but got one of these to go with our sink. It just sits on the worktop, hangs over the edge a little bit and has a gap where the water runs back into the sink. It's dishwasher proof and seems fairly sturdy. In theory we could then put it in the cupboard when not in use to give ourselves a bit more worktop. www.amazon.co.uk/FRANKE-x-Franke-Mobile-Drainer/dp/B095X2PJ94

Found them essential to stop the slow motion slide of doom: where your favourite glass does some surface tension magic and slides gracefully off the side and into the sink, breaking into a hundred pieces, all of them carefully concealed in the left over soap bubbles. Very smooth surfaces are the devil - sink grooves mean vacuum doesn’t form and glasses stay where you put them. Make sure they’re cut to drain properly.

Yep. That’s why we have them. Very little gets hand washed but the things that do are bottles/glasses etc and they need a non flat surface to get the inside fully dry.

Purplevioletblu · 13/11/2025 21:30

Wish we hadn't have got them, are terribly stained and have tried everything to get the stains out but they have a horrible yellowish tinge (light coloured quartz) water just sits in them. Reading above maybe they weren't cut in properly? Wouldn't recommend.

RuncibleSpoons · 13/11/2025 21:31

We are not having them, mostly because I don’t like the look of them.

nightswimming1 · 13/11/2025 21:33

Pointless IMO. For my occasional handwashing of items I have a dryer tray I get out from the kitchen sink cupboard below. So glad I declined them (and saved money too).

ZenNudist · 13/11/2025 21:33

We have them in black quartz and they are fine. Like pp said you need some traction for your drying pots. I have a rack which sits on top but it dtops a tray say sliding down and pushing the rack off.

EnchantingDecoration · 13/11/2025 21:37

We got them because although we do have a dishwasher we handwash a few things every day. We found things didn’t stack well enough on them (a lot of what we hand-wash is plastic lunchboxes etc that topple off each other) and the water did collect in them so things didn’t dry very well so we ended up buying a low white wire rack to go over them, so a bit pointless really. They do collect water and we have to give them a good wipe to stop limescale collecting in them, if it starts to it does look yellow because the quartz is white with flecks but no staining just need to scrub them a bit sometimes.

Edited to add: I do like the look of them though and you can’t still move the rack and use the area as extra worktop if needed even with the grooves.

JudgingJudy · 13/11/2025 21:47

We have them and regret them. 1. They stain because the grooving cuts through the glazed finish on the granite. The grooves are more porous stone. They do clean with Pink Stuff.

  1. They're useless. Water sits in them. I always put down a teatowel and put the wet ware on it.
clarrylove · 13/11/2025 21:50

We have them and no issues with them at all. No staining and they drain well I to the sink. They go from shallow to deeper as they near the sink.

Prelim · 13/11/2025 22:13

Long flat surface with a slight ridge around it, slightly sloping Sedona to the sink. We put a teacloth down for drying and the ridge props things open slightly if you need to rest something on to dry. But, we are in London and it’s a hard water area so need to avoid anything water can pool and is hard to clean.

Whataretalkingabout · 14/11/2025 12:03

If you think you need them OP, I suggest a stainless steel satin finish sink with draining groves which is much easier to clean and maintain; this would also avoid difficult hard water stains on the stone.

If you prefer the look of a sink rim hidden by the slab of stone I would chose it without the drain groves, which will give you a larger work area.

We have them, good for when I hand wash items that don’t go in the dishwasher. No issues with staining, the odd spray of antibac seems to help. When they were cutting the worktops I asks them to make the drying grooves extra deep so the water drained better.

BearPear · 18/02/2026 19:26

Those who say they don’t wash up at all, what are you doing with your recycling?
We have pale quartz with the grooves, if ever I notice the grooves looking less than perfect a quick once over with Barkeeper’s Friend sorts it out.

Just warm water with fairy liquid. Had mine for years and no stains

Thank you for the advise
