Is it better to have less cupboard, countertop or exposed brooms in a kitchen?

We are having a new kitchen delivered in a few weeks and are not able to move our gas meter (too expensive) so are having to make some adjustments to the design. We had wanted to have a longer worktop on one side and have top and bottom cupboards but the gas meter would be exposed in the middle.

In your opinion is it better to:

A. Have 10cm less countertop and then have two equal full length cupboards (one is a built in fridge) and an enclosed 30cm end unit for brooms.

B. Keep the countertop length and have a 50cm cupboard next to a 60cm fridge and a 30cm enclosed broom unit.

C. Keep the countertop and the equal width cupboard and fridge but have exposed brooms in a 20cm unit at the end.

Not offended if this is not the type of riveting question you want to engage with! Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Do you have a diagram/floor plan/pic etc @Plantsofa as I'm struggling to visualise the space?

Brefugee · 05/11/2025 13:56

I am team keep the brooms out of the kitchen if they are not in a cupboard

Ollybob · 05/11/2025 13:58

Put brooms behind door or even hung from side of door that faces the wall.

20cm is not very wide to get broom and mop in, you'd end up pulling them both out every time.

Also depends how big the rest of tour counter is, losing 10cm from say a 90cm counter is different to losing it from several metres.

We have a tall cupboard for our mop, broom and dyson stick vacuum and I wouldn't be without it, I hated it before when they were all out in our old kitchen.

A sounds best to me (i.e. most practical) but as a PP says, it depends on dimensions and how much work surface there is. Do you have a kitchen plan?

Thank you all! Here you go. The top one shows the smaller counter top and equal cupboards (imagination required for the 10am less wide cupboard option. The bottom shows the smaller end cupboard.

And again with pictures of that side! It’s a galley kitchen - not massive.

Could you get a joiner to do a bespoke cupboard door there and fit something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/PrimZooty-Adjustable-Multifunctional-Organizer-Organization/dp/B0DNJKQN7S/ref=sr_1_7?th=1

10cm is not much counter space (assuming you have a big run or an island elsewhere?). I would lose the 10cm and keep all the cupboards as you want.

when we renovated our house we moved all the cleaning stuff to a cupboard under the stairs. It was such a good move to get it out of the kitchen and into a big cupboard that actually fits everything properly rather than having bits scattered about. We have a dustpan and brush, washing up stuff, and dishwasher stuff in the kitchen but that’s all

Brilliant feedback. Thanks everyone!!

Why haven’t you put them in the plinth, longways?

too late to redesign?

Plantsofa · 06/11/2025 09:24

@GetInTheBinDave - this is inspired. Genuinely hadn’t occurred to me. That cupboard is full of the boiler but the one thing it can take is a couple of brooms!
I think this works well with the enclosed end cupboard design though - as that can also be an extra area for bits and pieces - tools maybe.
Thank you for pointing this out!

I have telescopic handles on the brooms and mops owing to a small cupboard. Just mentioning it in case it changes anything.

Plantsofa · 06/11/2025 17:47

@APatternGrammar - brilliant! Thank you!

Another query, should anyone be interested in answering:

This is the oven side of the kitchen, it’s fully tiled (as is the end by the window). We are planning to take those off, re-plaster and instead have one big long splash back probably in a milky white.

These tiles are outdated right? We’ve never been in love with them but just checking before we do this.
