Which Framing Pattern Would Be Perfect For Apartment Decor

Hi everyone,

I live in a small apartment and I’m trying to make my walls look more stylish without making the space feel crowded. I’ve recently started collecting art prints and photos, and now I’m a bit stuck on how to arrange or pattern the frames on my walls.

I’ve seen a few different styles online like gallery walls with mixed sizes, straight grid patterns, symmetrical layouts, and even random but balanced arrangements. The problem is, I’m not sure which one would actually look best in a smaller living space where wall area is limited.
Here’s what I’m working with:

  • The main wall is around 8ft wide.
  • Ceiling height is standard (about 8ft).
  • I’m using a mix of A3 and A4 picture frames.
  • The room has neutral tones (white and light grey).

I’d love to know what layout or framing pattern would work best for a compact apartment. Should I go for a clean grid with matching frames, or mix frame sizes and colours for a more relaxed look? Any tips on how high to hang them or how to balance them with furniture would also be really helpful.

Would appreciate any advice or examples from those who’ve decorated smaller spaces, what worked best for you?
Thanks in advance!

Do a mock-up. Either the actual pictures on the floor or do low-tack masking tape on the wall. Make the frames about 1"-2" apart (close enough to form a gallery but not too close).

I don't think that the compactness is the important factor. The style of the room -e.g. modern and sleek versus bustling and eclectic - is more of a steer.

The mid-point of any Art should be about eye-level i.e. 57" from the floor. Treat a gallery as one piece and find its mid-point.

It sounds like it's still a work in progress / flux so I'd go more for the 'random but balanced' plan, rather than something too rigid.
