What colour would you paint a dining room that has very limited natural light? The stairs wall which is visible has a navy wallpaper on. I don't like beige, but don't want to make the room seem darker. I'm thinking something with some warmth? Would love some suggestions or links please.

Rich burgandy. Make it nice and cosy. And then make sure it has plenty of good lighting.

Do you mean like lamps etc? I love burgundy but I'm worried it's too dark. Forgot to say although it's the dining room it's in the middle of the house and connects the kitchen and the lounge so we are in it a lot throughout the day.

Dulux Heritage Roman White is a pink based warm white so will give you the brightness without the clinical finish.

I would go for a fresh yellow tone, something like F&B Lancaster Yellow

I would go with Little Green Masquerade (in light or mid). Just done two small north facing rooms with these and they're gorgeous

Black, all black matt.

What direction does it face?

Our sitting room is east facing so it's lovely and bright first thing but most of the day it has no direct light so I painted it F&B Middleton Pink which is a very light pink. It's lovely and calm and warm and it works as a neutral (there's no other pinks in the room, there's wood, and blues and greens). Admittedly that's probably no longer fashionable if you are worried about such things but a dirtier pink probably would be, maybe something like Mocha from the Little Greene Sweet Treats range. But that would be less likely to go with the navy.

Yep. A nice overhead light, Low over the table and then lamps and floor standing lamps so you can have it light for when you need to do something but can have mood lighting for eating and sitting in the evenings.

Geneticsbunny · 14/10/2025 20:16

Sounds like you will need to have lights on to use the room anyway so I would lean into cozy and go dark.

I like dulux mossy stone which is green beige.

I do think a rich blue shade could work with the navy. Like F&B selvedge or oval room blue.

I also love that masquerade shade mentioned above

The dining room at our last house was a dark 'middle' room, open plan to a bright living space at one end and with a lobby leading off to the other side.

We painted both the dining and living spaces in Farrow & Ball Olive (an archive colour which is still available directly from F&B) with a feature Arts & Crafts style vintage wallpaper (🙄) on the chimney breast. It was a 400 year old property with lowish ceilings so we leaned into the darkness and had loads of lamps plus a candelabra over the table which we lit at dinner parties etc. The dining chairs were upholstered in a cream/orange mix and the rug was a contemporary Persian design in green with pops of orange, hot pink and turquoise.

Our current cottage is also old (Georgian) with another dark dining room - partially open to the kitchen - and more low ceilings. There's a pair of French doors to the south-facing garden, but no window in the actual dining space. We've painted both kitchen and dining room in Edward Bulmer Pompadour (the kitchen base cabinets too) which is a deep, almost burgundy pink. We've got a low hanging fringed pendant light over the table and several other lights/lamps dotted about. We're adding a bright striped kilim and colourful tablecloth to add interest/pattern.

Like yours @Teddlesisagoodboy the dining room is open to the stairs, the walls of which will be papered in a turquoise/black vintage wallpaper.

Rich burgandy. Make it nice and cosy. And then make sure it has plenty of good lighting.

My very naturally dark bedroom is Florentine Red by Dulux Heritage- it’s rich and cosy with plenty of lamps.

We went for a very pale carpet though and fresh white above the picture rails which gives a real sense of light.

Farrow and ball Setting plaster is gorgeous in a dark space, warm but not dark.

Little greene Mochi is lovely and warm - and looks great with navy.
