So this evening, my two-year-old (little tinker that he is) decided to take the ladle and give our kitchen island a few whacks.
Not ideal.

The island will survive, but it's left me thinking about what to do next with the wood, both on the island and the main kitchen counter. Right now, they're stained a darkish wood tone, but l've been toying with the idea of getting a professional in to strip it back and bring back the natural colour I need to double-check with DH, but I'm fairly sure it's oak.

That said, I'm not sure how it would look against the rest of the kitchen as we've got off-white cupboards, dark dining chairs, dark bar stools, and even a dark high chair.

Would the natural hue of the colour work, or would it look a bit odd / incongruous?
Perhaps it would be better to play it safe and leave as is, just re-do the staining (it's looking a bit tired / distressed in other places where we prepare food).

The floors will need to be redone in the next couple of years as well, I'm thinking more light-coloured floorboards (it needs to be appropriate and suitable to the era of the property). So that's another thing to think about: how the tone of the wood on the island / counters will work with the overall palette of the space. Trying to keep everything feeling cohesive without it looking weird.

Any insights or observations would appreciated. And thank you.

Pictures are from earlier this year, April I think, as the weather was turning nice again i.e. decent light.

And the damage done earlier.

Well if you're using a professional. I'd strip back, do a line wash effect and a suitable clear lacquer.

I agree. Pailer would look lovely.
