Living room colour ideas or inspiratoin?

We are repainting our living room next week and are in danger of painting it the same colour it's been for the last 15 years (and same colour as previous house living room) because we can't settle on anything new.
Existing colour is F&B Old White, which is one of their grungy stoney colours, but I do really like it. It's neutral without feeling too dull. But I do wonder if something stronger might pull the room together a bit. We have lots of oak (big oak fire surround) and 2 blue sofas (similar to those linked) and we have french doors leading out back which have long curtains in Sanderson's Aberella

We were thinking of F&B French Grey but we do have a lot in the house thats this green blue grey colour way (the front hall is Pigeon, for instance)

So I was wondering about a dusty rose colour, like FB's Potted Shrimp, but truth be told the name is putting me off. :D

So looking for ideas and inspiration. We want inviting, comfy, bright. More cottage than NYC loft, but not dowdy either

Personally I love Old White and I’d probably stick with that. It’s easier to change accessories/ furnishings than paint colours, but I think Potted Shrimp could look good too. I’d stay away from blue/ grey on the walls, particularly with your sofa.

We have just moved into a house where the living room is bluey grey. One wall is Dulux pewter blue or something, we really don't like it, it's a bit gloomy I feel. We want to redecorate either in white, or cream or possibly a pale shade of yellow or apricot. I like the bluey grey on sofas, but on all the walls I think it makes the room look cold.

LibertyLily · 02/10/2025 16:24

I'd steer clear of playing it safe by sticking with Old White, personally, and would also avoid more blue/grey.

I think the Potted Shrimp (despite its name!) looks lovely @iontheprize and would tie your sofas in really well with your gorgeous curtains 😍 I would be brave and put it on all the walls, not just a feature wall.

We're using Edward Bulmer Nicaragua in the living room of our Georgian cottage. It's a deeper, more saturated pink than Potted Shrimp, but you can tell I'm a fan of pink living spaces, so probably biased!

Little Greene masquerade mid - a similar pink with a prettier name!

Zebracat · 02/10/2025 16:46

I think it’s time for a change! You don’t say which way the windows face, and that’s really important especially with pink and blue. If the room faces north or east, choose a lighter pink. We used Little Green Maquerade pale in our north facing room and it is lovely, but in a stronger light, I would have used Masquerade, or Mochi . Little Greene also have a greenish cream called Oakapple which would work well with your curtains. I do also like the potted shrimp colour. I wouldn’t choose blue, although my living room is Dix blue, and it is easy to live with.

iontheprize · 02/10/2025 17:16

I should have said it's south facing. Will have a look at those little greene colours

Pick one of the colours in the curtain fabric. I thought that there were pink flowers but are they actually more of an orange?
You could pick out the leaf colour (the lighter green) for the walls, have a secondary colour of blue (as per sofa and some of the flowers) and the 'pop' colour is that mustard yellow / orange / gold, that already goes with your blue.

I think Potted Shrimp is a great idea (and it’s at least a more appealing name than Dead Salmon?) But for a non-F&B pink, maybe this:

Pink would suit with the sofa colour & curtains or green, my living room has dark green walls with blush/fuchsia soft furnishings the faces north so I decided to embrace the darkness.
@LibertyLily what do you make of Edward Bulmer paint I’m thinking about using some in the hallway.
Offcom love Mylands paint not as much choice as F&B or LG fabulous paint to work with & excellent coverage.

Shetlands · 02/10/2025 19:48

I don't think Potted Shrimp would look good with those curtains. It's too yellow based. If you want to introduce a pink then I would match it to the palest shade of pink in the curtains, which is more of a blue based pink.

junebirthdaygirl · 02/10/2025 19:52

My immediate thought on seeing your couches was a dusty pink..it would be lovely. Go for it!

Kitchenbattle · 02/10/2025 19:57

We’ve just had ours done they are colourtrend subtle and I think the navy is called inkwell.

@dontcallmelen we've used Edward Bulmer emulsion and eggshell in a couple of rooms so far and prefer it now to Farrow & Ball for coverage. It's good to hear you recommend Mylands as we were thinking of using that somewhere too!

Oh that’s good to know about Mylands. I had a tester pot recently and could not make myself stop painting because it was so nice to use - the test square ended up being half a wall. Really want an excuse to redo a room now!

Somanylemons · 02/10/2025 20:13

Potted shrimp looks like - could also think about setting plaster.

Might be a bit much for you! But we have navy and teal furniture, with old white on the ceiling and Sudbury Yellow walls. Lots of windows/wooden book cases so it doesn’t feel too much.

iontheprize · 02/10/2025 20:18

We have mylands in the kitchen, and is a drean to paint with. The cabinets look as good as the day I painted them probably 5 years ago and the walls wash really well and I occasionally spot paint over marks and you'd never know.

Very odd, stopped by the decorators shop and looked for potted shrimp and it wasn't on the card, nor was it in their system. (They are a general decorating shop and said maybe you could get it at F&B but they didn't see it.) I got a Masquarade sample instead - its just drying on a bit of card. Will report back, and try to get a sense of undertones @Shetlands but that stuff is not my forte. The website says neutral but it may be the yellow side of neutral

@iontheprize It looks as though Potted Shrimp is an archive colour...which means you can still get it, but only from F&B directly and it can't be returned. I think you can buy a sample pot online.

dontcallmelen · 03/10/2025 15:42

@iontheprize my kitchen cabinets are painted in Rose Theatre by Mylands lasted so well, I have a a couple of chairs & a cupboard painted in Floris which is a very pretty pale pink or Palmestone Pink which is slightly paler might be worth having a look at.

dontcallmelen · 03/10/2025 15:45

@LibertyLily thank you will order a couple of Edward Bulmer samples definitely check out Mylands I’m always banging on about them as I get irrationally cross that they don’t get as much love as F&B or LG they are a fairly local company feel obliged to give them a shout out.
