No to white woodwork in house

We are just buying a new home thats a 1930s mock Tudor fronted property. As its not an era as such, we are planning to go Edwardian/Victorian styling unless anyone can suggest anything more in keeping? Also, we are thinking to steer away from brilliant white Woodwork (walls, doors, skirting etc) and was wondering if you can use just normal paint to get an off white/cream? Seems Satinwood which we normally get only comes in white unless you get the tinest tin and its a 4 bed house! Also I guess we would need to do ceilings in same to match the Woodwork? We cant seem draw a conclusion on it so any input would be great!

When you say 'they' adopted art deco do you mean at the time of construction or the last owners?

Just don't remove any period features whatever you go for stylewise, as they add value.

I meant the interwar period didnt have its own styling as such and took on the art deco styling. Seems there were many cross overs in the 1930s. The period features are most definitely staying 😍

We’ve got a 1930s semi and have done our woodwork in the same colour as the walls and our ceilings/above the picture rail in the complementary white for each colour. Our door frames are primed in white but they’ll be a v dark grey/light black eventually.

I’ve included an example below but it might take a while to get approved. The weird marks aren’t on the wall, I cracked my camera protector dropping my phone off a ladder whilst decorating 😂

This is lovely and certainly the look we want. This has convinced us to stick with white for the picture rail and ceilings and then potentially colour code the other Woodwork once we decide on colouring. We are having the whole place painted neutrals before living it in and then deciding on each room colour

sounds… interesting

I thought I remembered your username! Your thread that blew up because you wanted your partner’s half of the property to go to you and not his children… what happened?

No WE wanted it to go to eachother to provide security for the surviving partner as his children will benefit from other sources. People like yourself came at me because you disagreed with how WE saw/wanted our financial situation to work upon death. Its been sorted in line with OUR wishes

The 1930s houses had no identity of their own styling wise. They adopted styling from eras either side so edwardian or art deco/moderne. Done well you can blend all 👍 the inside doesnt necessarily need to match the outside its about personal preference. You seem to be unable to accept people may have different ideas of how things could/should work!

Yes because a forum is for someone to come and gain advice and not be attacked for their way of thinking or wanting to do things. Everyone should be open minded and understand others may have different opinions.
Yes interesting the house will be. Not a boring bland box that alot of people live in today. Having successfully refurbed my current property to its original glory, I am sure we will pull this one off too but reached out for advice which is what the forum is for!

Re read it. It was in relation to you saying I was aggressive and angry.... clearly you only read what you want in a post and interpret incorrectly.

Oh on the other thread

I will leave posters to make their own view then of how you came across on that thread.

It was a little terrifying

No its was the reaction of someone who was being attacked for their way of thinking and their/their partners personal preference. Just because stuff said doesnt align with your way of thinking or sit well, you should accept it and move on. Bit like interior design, just because you dont like it, doesnt mean its wrong.

Yes we dont do gloss at all. Just come from a new build that had gloss and it went yellow! Satinwood comes in different colours in dulux but only in small tins of which we would need a tonne!

I don’t think this is about white it’s about shit paint. Steer away from cheap paint generally, pale whites or creams from Little Greene or Farrow and Ball won’t discolour like cheapo gloss. Besides there are many colours to choose from and colour drenching (taking a colour or tone floor to ceiling) is very fashionable at the moment.

soupyspoon · 01/10/2025 08:55

I like white gloss and if its the right base it doesnt go yellow

The problem with the wood being the same as the walls is that I think it looks a bit student digs, shared house look. It reminds me of that

I also do love the dark green/black type woodwork sometimes but it will show up every bit of dust going, whereas white doesnt do that.

Rustoleumcolours.co.uk do some fantastic paint in a huge range of colours, finishes and suitability.
I've just done my bathroom walls and wood in Haversham pink, it looks incredible!!

Thank you. I will look at these paints and yes we do like the whole room being in the same colour. We were worried white may look a little stark against the colour palette in mind but think we will do white just less sheen

We saw these whilst browsing last night and have certainly seen some beautiful colours in their range one of which was the Haversham pink! 😍

Think the last house was the work of Bloor and Dulux trade gloss to be fair. I get what you say about the all one colour thing 🤣 although can be effective done right. We do love the dark Woodwork too which has been a consideration for us.....

We've colour-drenched several rooms both in our current Georgian cottage (ongoing major project) and previous 400 year old house that we renovated fully (before selling last year) using Edward Bulmer, Little Greene and Farrow & Ball paints. Imo, it's never looked remotely like student digs! Possibly if it was all magnolia? But we prefer deep, saturated colours. There's no room for white/bland in our home lol 😆

@Kjv83 Another house we had was 1850s, but extended in 1924 in an Arts & Crafts style which was fairly mock Tudor in appearance internally and externally. We decorated primarily in colours of the Arts & Crafts period (not fans of Art Deco these days as we did that to death when we first met!), using some Craig & Rose colours (Morris Blue, Pale Oak, French Turquoise) and F&B (Brinjal, Olive, India Yellow). It helped that we already had a large collection of Arts & Crafts Movement furniture/decorative items/textiles which suited the setting perfectly.

I'd definitely consider adding a bit of William Morris to your home! But go with what you love - eclectic is great 😉

I read your post as meaning you didn't want white gloss for woodwork rather than being against white per se.

Even just switching the same colour from gloss to satinwood makes a big difference. I hate gloss paint.

Me too. I always go for a satin finish.

outdooryone · 02/10/2025 09:52

Find a local trade paint place - I use the Paint Shed. They have a much wider offering of paints and can mix any colour and finish.

Avoid B&Q etc as they are just retail paints and limited on what they have.
