Head of bed against the radiator or the window?

pontipinemum · 27/09/2025 22:49

I am doing up our bedroom at the moment.

The room is 4m x 3m. To make the best of the space I think the bed need to be against the window or the rad.

Does anyone have any experience with either of those?

Neither is ideal, the radiator won't heat the room or the bed head will get damp from condensation. Is there another option? If needs must then I'd go window but well away to allow air to circulate back of the bed head

Snoods · 27/09/2025 23:11

Ours is almost up to the window. Not had any issues. But the radiator is there too. The bed isn’t as wide as the radiator is long so the heat works fine

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/09/2025 23:19

The radiator is horrible - you're either too hot and wake up with a banging headache every morning or it's switched off and the room is permanently cold. And under the window means light pollution and often draughts.

Sometimes, giving yourself the most floor space isn't the most effective use of a room. We've got one uninterrupted wall of 2.7m which takes the wardrobe and drawers and just enough space to walk around the bed and open those. It's the best arrangement because it makes it comfortable to sleep in.

Ok thanks everyone. It may be that we don't go with either option.

Wall A Blue = window
Wall C Red = radiator
Wall C Black = door, it opens in towards the rad.

This is a very rough idea of the room. The bed was always against wall D. We used to use a spare room for our clothes but the baby lives there now! We left it off until after babies to do up the room because of cots/ next to me etc.

DH wanted to put the bed against wall B. I didn't think this would work, having the head of the bed at the door didn't seem right to me.

We now have it against the radiator - wall C. I actually quite like the 'feel' of where the bed is there. I'm thinking a radiator cover.

The wardrobes against wall B would have to be smaller than what I think we need as you obviously need space to walk into the room

We had to re do all the heating pipes a few years ago. Should have moved the radiator to wall b.

You're right, C is better. A cover would hide it, but you still have the problem of overheating.

D needs to be the wardrobe wall, though.

Thanks, yes I do think that wall D needs to be the wardrobe wall. I want a pax built in wardrobe from Ikea. That will have enough space for everything to go into. Right now we have two sets of drawers and I still hang things in the babies room. The room is full of clutter though.

Over heating would be the only problem. We have the head of the bed at wall C now, only moved it last night. So I think we should give it a few weeks before committing. I really don't think I'd like it under the window.

I wouldn't mind loosing heat into the room so something like this might be nice

Wall D is ideal for the bed position here, as this is in the ‘command position’ of the room according to Feng Shui principles.

Except then the flow is completely disturbed by there being furniture on the other walls affecting the ability to walk around the bed. And the head would again be almost under the window, both creating a sense of the walls closing in, rather than having space to breathe.

ChubbyPuffling · 30/09/2025 17:10

Does the radiator need to be so big, or even horizontal? Go vertical and it would take up so much less useable wall space.

Hohofortherobbers · 30/09/2025 18:07

Vertical rad to free up wall soacd is a goid shout, otherwise could the wardrobes fit on wall b? Could the bed fit on wall b and you rehang the door to open to the left?

Cantseetreesforthewood · 30/09/2025 18:28

Could you get a corner wardrobe, to go from the window round the corner, towards the door?

imo, the bed needs to go b or d, wardrobes on the opposite wall.

The vertical radiator is a great idea, and would free up quite a lot of furniture placing possibilities.

Hnjk67 · 30/09/2025 19:09

Bed wall D, some fitted storage to side and overhead, wardrobe wall B with mirrored doors to create sense of extra space. Could consider sliding door for room entry which then allows more space for big wardrobe. Do you even need heating in a sleeping room? Agree vertical radiator might be helpful. Slightly angled landscape mirror on wall C so that you can see the outside view when laying in bed. Not suggesting do all, rather options to pick and choose.

Okiedokie123 · 30/09/2025 19:15

Up near the window. I’ve had mine like that for years, three different houses, never had any issues.
don’t get a radiator cover - total waste of money, keeping a little cupboard warm!

tofuprincess · 30/09/2025 19:19

Just for balance I've got my headboard against wall B. It did seem a bit weird to begin with, but now I'm just used to it (and nice to see DC as they come into the room).

Richtea67 · 30/09/2025 19:21

Can radiator be moved to go underneath the window? We recently moved a radiator and it wasn't too big a job.

Yes this

GardenersDelight · 30/09/2025 19:25

We have ours under the window and it's no problem, quite like the fresh air tbh

pontipinemum · 30/09/2025 20:23

@ChubbyPuffling a vertical rad might be a thing. We don't really even need it in our room too much, just to take the chill out.

@Hohofortherobbers I did consider rehanging the door. That might also be a possibility. But I think it's unlikely. DH was beside the door and really didn't like it. I usually go to the loo once in the middle of the night and apparently i bumped into him!

@Hnjk67 I could never have a mirrored wall in my bedroom I would constantly say hello to myself, apologise for being in the way or frighten the life out of myself catching myself by accident!!

I've posted on here before looking for advise and usually take what I can onboard. Very complicated situation with our house being owned by ILs and we pay them a 'mortgage' they still have a strong say in all that goes on. I've discussed it at length on threads for Farmers wives!

Could you have it in the corner of walls D and A?

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2025 20:33

I don’t think corner is a good option for obvious getting out of the bed reasons.

Im in the wall D camp too, my room is almost exactly like diagram too.

parietal · 30/09/2025 20:35

bed against D. Cupboards on B.

LizzyEm · 30/09/2025 20:57

Put in a folding door.

Edited

Id just make my husband go in the back corner! 😂 He never wakes up during the night.

pontipinemum · 01/10/2025 00:16

no I don't think I would like the bed against the wall. I will give it a few weeks with the bed where it is to see how it feels
