Awkward shaped sitting room

Hello. Photos to follow when they've been okayed.

I'd really appreciate some thoughts about how to lay out my sitting room. It's 6 sided, it would be rectangular, but it has a rectangular shaped corner taken out for the hall.

We have recently moved the TV from right of the fireplace as it was too far away, don't want a massive one. So we moved it to the back to have a cosier TV area and rotated the sofa bed. If that's the right permanent place for the TV, we'll put it up on the wall.

Is there a better place for it?

I think we'll get rid of the green settee and have a smaller 2 person one there so we'll have an area for 4 of us to sit by the fire (not TV viewing place), small settee plus the 2 arm chairs.

I don't like the colour of the sofa bed but can't work out what colour covers to buy. I fancy cream, but the children are too messy and dirty (tween and young teen). I think rust would work with the fireplace but I don't really like rust! I do like green and pink as a combination but think that will clash with the fireplace.

The L-shaped sofa is a monster but we need a sofa bed as we don't have a spare room. I'm thinking a coffee table in front of the sofa bed would finish that's area off (I hanker after a hammered copper one as it makes me think of my grandparents).

If anyone can see this as a blank canvas and advise, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!

I like the idea of different zones. What about burgundy covers for the sofa bed? I think that would work with the fireplace and your like for pink and green.

I love this room! I feel like the layout depends on what you mostly spend your time doing tbh. If TV watching is the main activity then the most space should be devoted to that. If the conversational area is more important then the layout is great as is, though I think I'd swap the green sofa and the chairs as you are blocking the radiator with the sofa and pull then forward away from the wall.
If you keep it as it's if keep the TV on the little unit and add a rug. Covers wise I'd go for a pattern in pinks, greens and cream. Patterns hide marks better.

If this was my room I'd have the comfiest sofa facing the fireplace and the TV on the right. Then I'd put a table in the narrow part of the room for jigsaws and games with the two armchairs, maybe directly behind the sofa or maybe in the middle of that space. If extra seat was needed I'd get a couple of small wood framed armchairs, a bench or and ottoman that could be moved as needed.

I'm no help but just want to comment to say I think it looks fab

I would also move the sofa a bit away from the wall, it will look nicer.

And I'd consider getting a bigger rug. Rugs should ideally finish under the furniture, a rug that's too small makes a room look even smaller.

You can definitely use pink as a complementary colour with copper as long as it's a more deep muted tone and not bright (think blush or similar).

I love your floor and fireplace 😍

I think your rug is positioned the wrong way - it would make the space feel more balanced if you rotated it 90 degrees. I’d put the TV on the right-hand side of the fireplace with a shelf unit underneath on an extender so you can push it in or pull it out when needed, making that the TV area. Then, turn your current TV spot into a cozy, relaxing nook - but only if you watch more TV than just sit and relax without it.

lovely room. i really like your colours and furniture. sorry i don't have anything to add to the layout plans!

Is the window next to the sofabed in line with the door? Or closer to the fireplace side of the line? If so, if be tempted to run a curtain rail across do you can shut off that part of the room. Or get room dividers. That way you can have a wee reading corner and it might be nice for visitors to be able to hide their stuff away.

On that note I'd turn the dogs 90 degrees so it's under the window and move the tv to the other end. Or have it up on the wall where it is so you have a tv nook.

But it's a lovely room.

Could you draw a sketch floor plan with dimensions and positions of doors/windows? It's hard to know how a rearrangement could work without this.

Love your style though!!

DenisHealeyEyebrows · 27/09/2025 12:49

Hi everyone. Thank you all so much. I'm out today but I'll do a sketch plan with dimensions tomorrow, thank you all so much for the enthusiasm!

I'd consider fencing off the awkward corner with a sofa, and creating a nook behind it. Library/reading/office kind of space. Depends on dimensions obviously.
Can you rehang the door so it opens against the wall?

It’s so lovely, that floor is beautiful.

Don’t know if this would work but another idea could be to get one of these kinds of tv mounts so the telly can come out when in use but sit against the wall otherwise

C are the chairs and I had to put tables in (T) cos I hate not having a place to put my drink. Agree with burgundy for the sofa bed.

If it were my room (wish it was), I’d paint F&B Tailor Tack for winter.

Hi everyone. I'm uploading a plan of the room and also a photo of the door as I thought "Brilliant suggestion to rehang the door" but th handle mechanism is too intricate to swap it over (I think!).

Can easily move green settee under window, that swaps sides of the room quite a lot, but in the spring and summer I like to sit in my armchair by the window. However, I can have a winter set up and a summer.

From a what do you spend most of the time doing, as a family if we're in here we'll often be watching TV. We watch Modern Family together on a Friday evening and DD1 and I are binge watching Wednesday 😁.

I think the ugly sofa bed is the problem but we do need a sofabed and this stores the bedding in it!

Unfortunately I have no actual advice, but have you thought of giving an interior design app a try? Moving things around would be easier when everything is in digital and you won't need to re-draw the plan every time. Something like https://interior-design3d.com/ or https://planner5d.com/ could help, I think, and you can throw on different colors to see if you like others better! You can also upload the drawing to Chat GPT to give you suggestions.

mochimoons · 01/10/2025 10:20

I think if you move the TV to the right of the fireplace, and then shift the sofa bed around so the long part is under the window, move the armchair there and add a coffee table to make that more of a chill out space then you're sorted!
