I am buying a house, hurrah! It has a horrible kitchen, boo hoo. We won't be able to refit for a while, as using up all our money on house. So what colour can I paint the walls to take the edge off these HIDEOUS floor tiles??

Striking colour on units and walls, huge rug in complimentary colours and you will hardly notice - problem is they are the darkest thing at present

Nannyfannybanny · 15/09/2025 16:12

Are the units white? How much natural light, deep blue or green shade, big rug..

sbplanet · 15/09/2025 16:53

Put vinyl down on the floor?

BountifulPantry · 15/09/2025 16:55

Easy to add peel and stick vinyl tile on top as a temporary solution. Cheap to buy and you can do it yourself.

When youre ready to do the whole kitchen they peel up again.

minipie · 15/09/2025 16:55

I would probably go for sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles on top as a temporary fix. I’m not sure painting the walls or units will draw attention away from the floor tbh and those bits look perfectly nice as they are.

crazycatladie · 15/09/2025 17:17

I’ve been looking at Tapi vinyl for my bathroom, I sent of for 3 free samples I’m really surprised how good quality it is. Perhaps worth a look to see if it’ll be doable.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/09/2025 17:20

Are they tiles? If so, can you paint them?

Soontobe60 · 15/09/2025 17:21

Honestly, I’d leave them alone and not even paint the walls unless they desperately need it. I lived with lime green walls, warped laminate and brown cupboards in my kitchen for 2 years before we were able to renovate. I’d much rather save as much money as possible for the full renovation job.

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/09/2025 17:27

They're not that bad. I thought that you were going to show a picture of purple, green and orange tiles with a pattern.

Just put a non slip runner over them.

Binfire · 15/09/2025 19:55

They’re not too bad! I would add a
colour to the walls and a
large rug to cover the middle
of the room. Add a couple of large plants and art prints. Once there are other colours in there they won’t seem so overpowering.

TheCoralDuck · 15/09/2025 20:55

If the grout is dirty, scrub it really well. Those dark lines make every single tile stand out and draw you eyes to the floor straight away. If the grout lines were lighter, the orange would just kinda blend in across the whole floor.

if the wall needs a fresh lick of paint, paint them in a neutral of your choice. As other posters are saying, a rug/runner and some art work and you’re sorted until you can renovate.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/09/2025 21:08

Definitely cheap vinyl off the roll.
its really easy to fit, just cut with kitchen scissors and use spray adhesive.
if you take the skirting panels off under the cabinets, you can extend the vinyl about six inches under the cabinets then put the panels back.
try a wood effect as it tends to be more forgiving if its a bit wonky!

SunnySideDeepDown · 15/09/2025 22:08

Lean into the colour palette. I’d go with pinkish terracotta on walls with lots of plants and some cool framed prints. Nothing clashing like sage green etc, that’ll look naff imo.

Geneticsbunny · 16/09/2025 07:38

It looks like lino to me. Either way I would just lay lino over the top till you can afford to replace it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 16/09/2025 07:43

I like the cupboards and the floor tiles. As PP says cleaning the grout would be a good idea. And I'd change the cupboard handles.

Wall colour - maybe a smoky blue or sage green.

dontcomeatme · 16/09/2025 07:47

I really like the floor, the whole aesthetic actually! I agree with pp saying sage green. Make it really warm and neutral

BluePeril · 16/09/2025 08:13

I’d paint both walls and units some deep, warm colour — olive green or Inchyra blue. I agree with a pp that the reason the tiles draw the eye is that they’re currently the strongest colour in the room.

Seeyouincourtkeith · 16/09/2025 09:29

Don’t blame you, it’s a shame as the units aren’t too bad. I have a en-suite floor similar and got a local fitter to put some vinyl down. Cost about £100 all in.

minipie · 16/09/2025 10:18

Any kind of green or greeny blue will just exaggerate the orange/pink of the floor.

Ketzele · 16/09/2025 11:21

I feel your pain, I have lived with a similar floor. I found contrasting shades (green, blue) were a mistake, I think it works better to go with the warm tones. I colour-drenched my walls, ceiling and top units earthy pink, you could also try rust, brown, caramel? I painted my lower units black to anchor it all, and this worked quite well.

Stick on vinyl tiles also a good option.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/09/2025 12:59

Stick on tiles are the very devil to remove..I actually like the floor as well..I was assuming the poster didn't like the colour of them, which is why I asked about light.levels, and suggested dark blue or green..I think light green would emphasis the yellow tones. Amazing how we are all so different.

MH0084 · 18/09/2025 13:04

I actually like the tiles! The grout however is an eyesore. Perhaps try painting the grout first as a low cost quick job and if you still don’t like it, then vinil is the way to go.
