Just had the loft done. I wishi had not put the radiator under the window as now i dont know how to dress the window… curtains and they will trap the heat under, blinds and it will be perhaps a bit too naked/cold.
the room is drenched is F&B babouche dupe and the adjoining bathroom is F&B sardine
can you help me with finding a good solution for blackout curtains/blinds. I am attaching pictures (including one of the colour) TIA

Surely either way you'll lose the heat from your radiator to the window, can you have it moved?

Roman blind, without a doubt. Unless you are a seamstress yourself, go to your local curtain maker-upper shop that also sells fabrics, choose a lovely fabric (I'd recommend a pattern with 2-3 main colours in, including your paint colour: take a white sheet of paper that you have painted with your paint colour, for matching), and get them to measure up your window and make up the blind with a blackout backing. Setting the blind outside the recess rather than inside improves the blackout ability, but get them to end the blind just above the radiator. None of this is cheap but in my view it's worth it to get a neat professional finish and your blind will look lovely for many years to come. Not sure of your taste in pattern - traditional or modern - but something like this might do? https://www.thepureedit.com/hina-marigold-printed-cotton-fabric?gadsource=1&gadcampaignid=20481305685&gbraid=0AAAAAo6bfs1Ts0PrrA6c7EAtAdVrd2x3j&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwMq5yOTXjwMV04tQBh3WqCvWEAQYByABEgL5MfDBwE

I love the colour!!

For practicality id get a blackout blind that sits inside the recess and will also trap in the heat.

Then id have full length curtains for appearance. You dont have to draw them? Or if u do, wait until radiator is off for the eve?

MotherofPufflings · 14/09/2025 09:13

We have blackout blinds and curtains where the radiators are under the window and tend to leave the curtains open when it's cold and will be using the radiator. You'll probably want to have a blackout blind to close during heatwaves to minimise solar gain.

As a PP has said, a good alternative to Roman blind with blackout lining is to have a simple blackout roller blind in the window recess and have full length curtains outside the recess, which you can leave open when the radiator is on and close when the radiator is off at night. Please see pic. I have one room (my bedroom) where I've gone for this option and in the other rooms I have the Roman blackout lined blind as described in my previous post. Personally I am a blackout obsessive so in my bedroom I have not only the blackout blind but also the full length curtains are lined with blackout material, so I have a pretty much total blackout for sleeping.

@tostaky love your colour drenched babouche!

We have the same set up as @DrNo007 in a couple of our bedrooms, although - similarly -we plan to have blackout roman blinds (plus full length curtains) elsewhere. I interlined the curtains in my pic as well as having blackout lining because I hate even the slightest glimpse of light coming through whilst I'm trying to sleep.

I would get a blackout Roman shade set inside the window with a weighted hem or preferably a rod in the hem so that the shade sits on the windowsill. You won't lose heat and you will completely block the light.

I don’t have an issue with curtains across a radiator because we always have the bedroom radiators off at night.

However, I think your window would look lovely with a blackout Roman blind, inside the recess.

Talipesmum · 14/09/2025 15:30

We’ve got curtains that stop above the radiator. I would have liked long curtains but this allows the heat to escape better, plus the material I chose was outrageously expensive so this kept it a better price :-)
Roman blind would have looked nice but I think with the ceiling height you’ve got above the window, you’d end up obscuring a lot of the light with the blind when it’s up?

Thank you all for your suggestions.
i had ordered sample of fabric for curtains and samples of wooden blind but actually you are right, a roman blind would look great.
i quite like the style of your first suggestion @DrNo007 thanks.
@Talipesmumi think you are right about the roman blind onscuring a little of light. I wonder if there is any flexibility in how the blind folds?
a roller blind is always an option though id prefer a roman blind.
thank you all for your help 😊

Have you thought about shutters (sometimes called Plantation Shutters)? We had them installed and totally love them.
