Window privacy film

Hi can anyone advise if window privacy film is any good and how hard is it to apply ? I’m interested as I don’t want to blind the window as it’s so lovely to have so much light but it is a bedroom

I too have been trying with the idea of this. I am door to pavement cottage.

pashmina696 · 30/08/2025 23:59

I have it on a couple of windows - it stays on pretty well - getting a neat edge is tricky - they attach with water so pretty easy to apply - after some time it might curl a bit but just needs re sprayed and it will stick back - definitely cheaper than getting a privacy glass installed- doesn’t block light noticeably at all

cloudjumper · 31/08/2025 00:08

I put it on the windows of my ground floor study - very easy to stick on, no problems.

Istilldontlikeolives · 31/08/2025 00:09

The tinted mirror type stuff has left blue marks on the outside of the window I put it on (I think the sun has somehow caused it to stain the UPVC). It is also see through at night. It's a shame because at least you can see through it - albeit with a tint to it - a bit like looking through sunglasses I suppose. I have also added a sort of frosted privacy film to another window - easy enough to cut and apply - clean the window, spray water on the window, put the film on, spray and squeeze out. Very hard to get all the air bubbles out though. I'm happy with it though as I didn't want voile type nets or a blind in addition to curtains. The only issue is that you can't see through it so I haven't covered the entire height of the window with it - only enough to stop people looking in as they walk past.

Can anyone be specific which film they've applied with a good result themselves? I tried the Ikea version and after about 3 hours had to accept I was never going to get the air bubbles out and give up. It looked terrible.

@cleo333

This is a nice site for ideas

Istilldontlikeolives · 31/08/2025 00:20

I got the one from B@Q. It was either 9.99 or 14.99 a roll ( I think) depending on the size. I haven't been able to get all the air bubbles out. I 'm not sure why. it is more obvious at night with the light on but it isn't bad enough to bother me. I'm interested to know how it holds up in the winter as I get condensation despite my best efforts.

Is it easy to taste off if you don’t like it ?

Taste off has me thinking that you need to lick it off the window. A bit like the flavoured wallpaper in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Smile

The snozberries taste like snozberries!

I took some off after about 6 months to replace with a different design. It just peels off as if you were pulling sellotape from the window. No marks left.

WhiskerPatrol · 31/08/2025 08:04

I got one from Amazon but couldn't get it to stick - was fine when first applied but peeled away and fell off after a few days. In the end I gave up and put sellotape around the edges to hold it in place! A friend has since told me that windolene spray sticks it better than water but I can't be bothered to try again.

Ketzele · 31/08/2025 08:33

I got mine from the Window Film Company. A bit more expensive but really good quality and loads of brilliant designs. Mine has been up for over five years and no problems with peeling.

beecrazy · 31/08/2025 09:29

I got mine from Amazon for a bathroom velux window. It's been on for over 5 years now . No problems putting it on with water spray and no peeling off at all

TheeNotoriousPIG · 31/08/2025 09:56

I bought mine from Amazon. It is easy to apply if you have patience with DIY tasks (I do not, so a relative kindly helped me with it!). You clean your windows properly first, spray it with water, start to apply the film and smooth it down with something like a credit card to iron out bumps and creases.

In the day-time, it's brilliant, as nobody can see in (I have a very nosy neighbour, and it means that I no longer scare delivery people with my wild hair first thing in the morning!) and it provides some much-needed shade in excessively sunny rooms. It's been up for 2-3 years now and still does the job. However, if you have your lights on at night, you can see through it, and will need to cover windows with curtains or something.

I'm not sure how easy it is to remove, as mine is staying put for as long as I live here!

Autumnlife · 31/08/2025 22:33

I’ve got it on the summer house windows because it’s housing our hot tub which is used all year round. It’s never bubbled in five years. I purchased it off An and was very easy to apply and hasn’t even peeled.

Blueuggboots · 01/09/2025 07:50

https://abodewindowfilms.co.uk/ I got mine from here, just the plain one. It was easy to apply and looks great. The first pane I did had one or two little bubbles, but other than that, all the others were great.

We've added it to the lower sashes of the kitchen windows at the front of our cottage (kitchen rear window overlooks the garden so not required there) and haven't experienced any bubbling issues. It came from seller 'Frosted Window Film' on eBay.

We have blinds for added privacy which we close at night time.

Did you put this on yourself?

Does it need water?

Any difficulty in getting bubbles out?

Sorry for the 20 questions. About to buy some!

Meredusoleil · 01/09/2025 18:29

Yes. Did it myself. Yes. It needed water. No. No bubbles as the film is quite thick, so went on beautifully.

Please keep us updated if you don't mind, we have condensation on our Windows during Winter to which has put me off trying it out myself. I have to use a window vac to dry them off every day and wonder if it would pull the film off or if the condensation would make it slide down the windows anyway

OrdinaryGirl · 01/09/2025 18:33

We used Purlfrost and it has been great. Really easy to apply, and you can choose the level of frosting.
