How to fill this space

Am in the process of swapping over lounge and dining room - where the tv shelf was is now going to be a redundant space so need some ideas as to what l can do with it it has a book shelf above it then loads of space then an enclosed rectangular shelf where the sky box used to go. Already got a stereo so don't need that, don't want a tv there. DH suggested loads of house plants but l am terrible at keeping them alive.
Any suggestions please?

Could you provide a photo of the area?

WildCherryBlossom · 25/08/2025 15:51

Is this some sort of built in media unit you are trying to repurpose? Agree, photo would help. If it is roughly TV sized, how about a picture?

So the tv is going, as are some of the games and books underneath it - it's the space where the tv is now that needs filling.

I would swap the shelves for a freestanding book case a bit like this, filling most of the space (I’ve seen them in other sizes and colours) then add vases/pots/dishes, some books, maybe a lamp (one of the Pooky cordless ones would be good), decorative objects, trailing plants in pots etc. Don’t ram the shelves full, give the objects space to breathe! Then maybe swap a few things round seasonally, so pumpkins etc in autumn then pine cones, candles (fake ones), seasonal books, advent calendars in winter, followed by spring display of bowl of crocuses, fluffy lambs or Easter rabbits etc

Thank you - l love that idea but these are fixed to tue wall and cost quite a lot money - would need to redecorate if we removed them so need to work with what l've got really.

A tall vase with twiggy shit, and a picture in a nice frame.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/08/2025 20:04

As it is going to be a dining room, what about a wine rack ? And some kind of shelving unit inside where you could store napkins etc

Geneticsbunny · 26/08/2025 08:29

I would add a couple of extra shelves in so they ae spaced similarly to the existing ones and then put books on or boxes to store stuff in.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/08/2025 17:25

Agree tall vase (perhaps artful dried flowers rather than twiggy shit)

Izzywizzyletsgetbizy · 27/08/2025 15:38

How about placing a mirror or mirror tiles on the back, a down light under the top solid shelf and then one or two (space dependent)glass shelves, across the mirrored area. Could display wine glasses and/ or other dining type things. And a trailing (very good fake one) pot plant.

SwedishEdith · 27/08/2025 15:44

If it's going to be used a lot as a dining room, make it into a sort of drinks cabinet area. Metal tray, favourite spirits on display (pick ones with nice labels), cocktail shaker etc.

A lovely piece of art.

Some family photos, printed large-ish and framed.

I think it needs to be one thing (or several things that go together like the photos). Otherwise it will look accidental

Actually I have a similar space that currently houses a redundant TV. Hmmm

An art work on the wall or a sculpture. A stunning fake plant? An unusual table lamp? You must have a plug socket there from the TV.
