If I don’t like the current ‘granny chic’ interior design trend…

What style is still current for a rural farmhouse? I like to be at least vaguely in touch with the trends, even if small updates, but I can’t get on with most of the kitsch patterns, Alice Palmer type style at all! Help!

You want Studio McGee - think calming modern usa farm house style - it’s pretty classic and uses a mixture of textures etc rather than being bland beige

With the greatest respect, is there a reason you wouldn’t just decorate the way you’d like to? Is there perhaps a culture amongst your friends or family where you feel compelled to impress them rather than live the way you’d prefer? I truly am intrigued!

Have a look at Nkuku.

Yes. There’s no need to follow any kind of trend, current or otherwise.

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/08/2025 07:28

What’s ’granny chic’?

LavenderBlue19 · 18/08/2025 07:32

Can't you just buy things you like? Houses don't need to follow trends, just fill them with things that make you happy.

That said, there's gardening Instagrammer I follow whose house is absolutely beautiful, I love her taste. Her name is rebeccainthecottage.

Saponarium · 18/08/2025 07:53

Look at Daylesford Organic interiors, Soho Farmhouse, Rowan & Wren, Nkuku for inspiration. Also agree with Studio McGee.

Thanks for the recommendations, these look great and I’ll take some inspo!

In response to “why don’t you just decorate the way you like”, I am, that’s why I don’t want to do granny chic. But I do like things to look put together along a rough theme and I do like following trends. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with having no interest in trends either.

Why though?
Why do you like following trends?

WhoaaaBodyform · 18/08/2025 09:23

Well no, I suppose there’s nothing wrong with it if you like it. But you’ve just said you don’t like the trend - it’s just a bit confusing to me.

If you don’t have any creative vision that’s also fine, some people don’t - but it doesn’t mean you have to copy a room that you’ve seen in IKEA or Next or something.

It really sounds a bit to me like “following trends” is the modern version of “keeping up with the Joneses” and that you’re living for someone else and not yourself, and it makes me a little sad for you. Do you use your house to make TikTok videos? Do you have a teenager with judgey friends/parents you’re trying to impress? Or do you rent it out as an Airbnb? There’s no other reasons I can fathom where you would give up agency on the decor your own home so you can blindly follow trends at the expense of your own enjoyment (and of course the financial expense you’re going to in order to constantly update your home for everyone else’s benefit).

Please reconsider it. Life is short and you should make yourself happy. Decorate in a way that makes you happy rather than decorating in a way that you saw on daytime TV or in a high street shop. Bugger what your friends or the school mums think.

Dontcallmescarface · 18/08/2025 09:24

Whatever style you want...it's your house.

ExcellentDesign · 18/08/2025 09:33

Oh for goodness sake, the OP is just looking for some ideas and instagram accounts to look at, there's nothing wrong with that. We don't all find it easy and she obviously cares what her home looks like, that doesn't mean she's a sad individual who's only interested in keeping up with the Jones's. It is nice if people come round and admire your decor and nice to feel it's in tune with the beautiful homes you see online.

There really is. There’s a massive ethical waste issue if you’re buying cheap tat to follow trends (it’s the home decoration equivalent of fast fashion) and jettisoning it when the ‘trend’ changes, and paint in landfill is a huge pollutant.

ExcellentDesign · 18/08/2025 09:51

The OP has not suggested she's going to be buying cheap tat, styles and trends can go on for years without needing lots of replacements.

Dabberlocks · 18/08/2025 11:03

Having never heard of the term before, I just Googled some images of 'granny chic' and from what I can see, it covers a huge range of ideas, from 'traditional English farmhouse', '1970's explosion in a fabric warehouse', 'posh country house hotel', to 'entire contents of the charity shop'.

I think you could easily pick and choose a whole variety of things from any of those styles and come up with something unique to you.

DeLaRuiz · 18/08/2025 11:07

I think quite rightly posters are feeling free to ask questions because it is odd seeming to not just decorate your own home however you like, regardless of media manipulation.
Evidently the consumerism is endlessly rampant and is coming after your living room next!

ExcellentDesign · 18/08/2025 13:21

But the way people normally find out what they like is by looking at magazines, social media etc, you get ideas you'd never think of by yourself.

Love Studio McGee stuff!

Ketzele · 19/08/2025 11:06

Modern Country - I understand this as pale neutrals with heritage colour accents, lots of natural wood, texture (hubby knitted cushions, boucle armchairs, exposed brick etc), pale linen curtains, everything restful and comfortable.

Needanadultgapyear · 21/08/2025 08:10

If you like a little bit of colour Button Atelier could be worth a look to, though a lot of her design is specifically aimed at a California life style.
