Johnstones paint quality???

Hi just in the middle of painting the bathroom with this stuff (matte, and a pretty deep emerald colour) and think I'm losing my mind. Fairly used to painting, two coats is usually adequate for a good finish, but this paint just isn't covering the walls properly. Old paint is a very pale green. I've read recent reviews on Trustpilot where other people are having issues. Patches and streaks and drying unevenly and looking absolutely awful. I've used Johnstone's before with no issues, I actually found it to be better than Crown, but this is dreadful. Two coats and it looks as if I've painted on wax!

A photo my be helpful, you say it looks like you have coated onto wax, this sounds to me like the problem might be grease or other contaminates on the surface you’re coating rather than a problem with the Johnstone’s paint. Could this be the case?

What prep did you do before painting? The only time I have had something like this was when k neglected to prep a surface that needed it.

No, nothing on the surface (that I know of) I was just using the 'wax' image as a comparison for what it looks like. I've now done a third coat on two of the walls (breaking for tea) and it doesn't look TOO bad but may need a fourth.

I don't usually 'prep' walls apart from a bit of filler, sanding and a wipe round them. The walls of this room I have painted before without any issue!

I’ve used the Johnstone’s trade paint in matte last year and it was amazing. I didn’t do any wall prep and from the state of the room I’d guess it was last painted in the 90s. It looked pretty good after one coat, and great after two. The paint was a sage green painted over baby blue and baby pink (alternative walls in the same room)

I’m not at home at the moment, but I’m pretty sure it was this acrylic matt paint.

If you're painting over bathroom paint with matte emulsion, I wonder whether it's not adhering properly. Bathroom paint normally has a slight sheen and I think it might have needed a light sand before painting over it if you're not using another bathroom paint

I’ve used a johnstones dupe for f&b cornforth white in my living room and it’s a great paint. I would recommend it

I've used J paint without issue as well. It would actually be my preference. Hmm. Wondering if I've just got a can from some sort of rogue batch that's been inadequately mixed? I remember years ago getting a paint mixed in B&Q and my partner, who was a really good painter, really struggling with it, the same sort of streaky patchy effect. I think the dye must have started to separate or something.
