Redoing a kitchen on a budget?

Hi all

My appliances in the kitchen are still pretty decent but I hate the cabinets! I don’t have enough budget to re-do the whole kitchen and the cabinets themselves are fine, so I thought I’d just try and replace the doors. Local spraying company wants £2,200 to do this - not sure if this is expensive but it feels like it and I don’t think I can stretch to that just for doors. My second thought was to buy new doors and get a joiner to fit them. The only problem being is that it’s an old IKEA kitchen ( I think) and I don’t think their doors will fit. Does anyone have any advice, please? It seems silly really but I’d love a slightly revamped kitchen to cheer me up a bit! Thanks so much

I had my cabinets wrapped, they've been great.

I also painted my mums kitchen with Frenchic paint and that turned out great also.

If the doors are the same size as currently available, it’s not that difficult to fit doors yourself, there’s also door replacement specialists, just a case of getting quotes - they quoted me £2500, I opted for a new kitchen instead (£7k) as the rest of it was15 years old

Thank you both!

did you have your cabinets wrapped professionally if you don’t mind me asking?

Yeah, just under £500, benches included

Have Ikea changed their door sizes? If not can’t just just get new doors from there? Or there are other companies like Plykea that make doors for Ikea kitchens.

Measure some of your doors and see if they match Ikea's current sizes online.

About £3.5k for door respray (they removed doors, stripped the wrapping on the doors (old b&q), sanded, filled and sprayed), new worktops, sink and taps (didn't choose top of the range sink & tap though) with fitting included from plumber and gas safe engineer. They also sprayed the wine cabinet area to match with farrow & ball colour. Well worth it. Then paid for new flooring (extra) and it really looked fantastic. Kept original door handles. Wasn't expecting a miracle but absolutely worth it and don't think a £15k kitchen would have been any better. Kept original appliances as we'd replaced within 18 months anyway. Really pleased with result.

@BananaramaNanananasounds amazing. Do you have any photos?

Where did you get a kitchen from for 7K or is it tiny and or a goodly few years ago. We have been quoted 15-19K and that is for mid range appliances and laminate work surface.

Our kitchen is solid oak. We just replaced the worktops with quartz surfaces and used the same to cover the AWFUL tiles. New sink and appliances (for practical not aesthetic reasons) Job done for under £4000 (not inc appliances)

Our unit bases are really solid but 20 years old kitchen companies are saying they wouldn’t recommend putting quartz or granite on old units.

Its so costly so wondering if we can re use some of them and avoid having laminate.

I dd mine around six years ago - I bought replacement doors online, made to measure as needed- I think I went with kitchen door workshop in the end.
our kitchen is medium sized, the doors cost just under £400.
a local handyman fitted them for £250
really pleased with it all.

If it's an IKEA kitchen you can just get new doors from IKEA. They are really easy to replace.

The biggest/most important thing to know is what type of IKEA kitchen it is. There are a few different types. METOD/FAKTUM have a guide thing on their site showing how to tell.

Otherwise if it's ENHET those are different again.

It does sound like if it's FAKTUM you can't replace the doors easily but there is almost definitely a tutorial online for converting them.

Look at the B&Q cupboards I think they were called Caraway and Stevia doors. The cupboards are flat packed but a sensible teen can follow the instructions and make them up. Then fit the doors on. You make up the units first. Then put first one in place using spirit level and attach to wall with bracket. Then next unit attached to first one, using spirit level to keep them straight. Go along row in this way. If you can't do it yourself a handyman can generally do a decent job. You can buy end pieces that match doors to give it a nice finish. I think atm B&Q had an offer on to get 4 units for price of 3. Cheapest was free. Go onto B&Q site and price up. They offer a free planning service in store and you can say you will go away and discuss with DH.

Thanks everyone! Fairly certain the kitchen is an old FAKTUM one as I’d already measured the doors and none of them matched the sizes for the current Ikea ones. I’ve found someone to paint them for £400 plus the cost of the paint - sure beats the £2,200 quote for spraying them! Also saves the hassle of trying to get made to measure doors I suppose! There’s 20 drawers and doors in total for a tiny kitchen 🙈
