Vertical radiators in the hallway

So at the moment we’ve got the usual standard boring horizontal radiators. They look to be cheap and cheerful. Nothing special.
I purchased a dark grey one for the bathroom when I was planning to do Black accessories but having seen what’s happened to everybody else’s. I’ve gone right off that idea and now I need to Repurposed this radiator
Is it actually going to be useful in a hallway or is it in sufficient in people’s experience please?

I think it would look obtrusive in a hallway, especially in dark grey . I’ve seen one in a kitchen on Rightmove and it looked awful. Is listing it for sale to get some money back an option?

Can you paint it? Or paint the hall so it blends in?
I have vertical rads in the living room which made great use of some awkward wall space.

I definitely could paint the radiator that would be the zero option. It’s much too late to send it back unfortunately.
Have people found them warm enough though that’s my main concern?

We had vertical rads in the living room of our last house. As long as they are the correct size for the room (in terms ofbyhe heat they emit- can't recall the name of the calculation!), they work fine.

Thank you I strongly suspect they won’t be because they were bought for another room and calculated accordingly.
A daft post alround from me 😬

I have one in the hall and the heat is fine. Also have 1 in living room and kitchen..always warm enough.

We have one in our hallway and it’s fine. It’s a large hallway with high ceilings, a stone floor and a draughty door and I can still tell it’s heating the space well.

Look for a btu calculator online, then see if what it recommends for your hall is roughly in the ball park of the rad you bought in terms of BTUs

We have a tall grey one in the hall, it’s great! I’ll see if I can find a photo!

we were on a mission to make our downstairs warmer, had a new front door & then replaced the tiny radiator which was next to the door!

worked a treat!

Agree with 2025ishere you need to look at what the current ones btu is and if this one is better.

Plus the standard shape only juts out into the "bottom" of a hall and narrows the low area space but an upright narrows the whole width of hallway so furniture and stuff need to fir / be moved by rather than over it

bumblecoach · 19/07/2025 14:41

Both very good points, thank you

Mine was where the old small radiator was & we had a coat rack of doom on the wall above it!

That’s pretty much identical positioning to what I’ve got in mind. We don’t have to move any furniture because the hallway is so tight you can’t fit any furniture in there anyway.
