Decorating DIY or Professionals?

We have always had professionals in to do our decorating but I now find myself with time on my hands and wonder if I could do it myself. My experience is zero and I fear that my 60-year old eyesight won’t be up to scratch. I thought I could start with the downstairs loo and then the utility room and then maybe the smaller of the
bedrooms. What do you all think? Doable or not?

100% get on YouTube for tips on cutting in edges and prep and don’t overthink it, you’ll enjoy it. It’s such a great sense of achieve when you’ve done a room, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start DIY years ago!

Give it a go, if it doesn't work out all you've lost is time and the cost of the paint and brushes/rollers. You can always call in the professionals at any point if you don't enjoy it or are not happy with the result.

63 year old here - take advice on decent tools, brushes and paint, try a Brewers. Good lighting, so a portable work lamp and some glasses that work re. eyeliner to wall. Clea, preparation is key. Take your time. Some great advice online. And, have fun. Great when you do it yourself.

Agree with PP, it's the time and effort put into preparation that makes a difference. When I've had professionals in at least 1/2 of their time is spent on prep.

I’ve always done my own decorating. It’s easy to do, you can always find tutorials if you need them on you tube. I’d never pay someone ££££ to decorate a room if I can do it myself.

Depends if you’ve got the patience. You’ve got to take your time and not just wallop it. We’ve always done our own but when we move next time I’m getting someone in, I just can’t be arsed with it anymore and I want it to be seamless !

How important prep is depends on the quality of the finish you want. You can skip some steps if you’re happy with a more rough & ready finish.
A head torch is really useful. And have rags (old t-shirts or PJs are perfect) and white spirit to hand. If you’re doing it for the first times, walls are much easier than woodwork so, controversially, I’d start with a wall and see how you get on.
