Carpet or Karndean

We have a sitting room which currently has carpet. I'm sick of things being spilt on it.

It's a room we tend to use in the evening for watching TV and have a 'family room; which has wooden floors.

The carpet is 15 years old and disgusting. I don't think it will respond to cleaning. Do I just bite the bullet and buy a new carpet, or would I be better off switching to LVT?

It's DH who is the main spillage culprit and I have a 17 year old DS.

Also, if I have LVT I don't know what colour. We have a lot of wooden furniture, a lot so which doesn't quite match, so I worry wood effect LVT will just look naff and highlight that the other things don't match.

But I'll be fuming is we have a new carpet and people don't look after it.

We also have a dog and cat.

LVT sounds like a more practical option for sure and one of the stone or tile effect finishes would be a way to get around the mismatched wood issue. I think these chequerboard looks are really striking

Oh I was going to say keep it until any children get older, and then replace! Why is your husband spilling so much?

I’d go LVT if mess is going to be an issue. Maybe a washable rug (although I have no personally experience of these) to break up the look of it?

It's mainly alcohol related. It's an issue, which is being addressed.

Also, he's a clumsy arse.

Hard flooring and big rugs are the way to go.
Low pile big rugs are easy to clean or replace and can help break up or define areas.

Why not get engineered wood flooring and rugs. Can you paint some of the mismatched wood furniture so some wood and some painted ones match? Not that I particularly think furniture needs to match but as you mentioned it..

It's not really furniture you can paint.

We have Oak bookcases, a mid/dark wood piano, and then some Elm/teak mid-century style furniture.

Just had karndean fitted in kitchen/hall /bathroom after a flood and liking it so far (not a carpet fan anyway) It replaced a mix of (lovely) engineered wood/carpet/ceramic tiles and is the easiest thing I'v even know to clean.

One point re rugs is that you have to be careful about backing because rubber can discolour the LVT over time. I got the recommended doormat which was the only one needed but I think it can be spendy.
