Curtain pole for window in corner of room

We have a sash window in the corner of the nursery. There is only a 12cm gap between the edge of the sash box and the end of the wall/corner.

I have a lovely blind on the window but unfortunately too much light is getting in around the edges. So I think I’ll need to add curtains.

The online advice is that a curtain pole should extend at least 15-20cm beyond the edge of the window so that there is space for the curtains to be pulled back.

Is it better to:
a) Ignore this and have the pole extending 12cm each side
b) Allow 15cm on the side where there is space and 12cm on the other side (ie it will be uneven).
c) Another solution I’ve not thought of!

I'd go for option a. The online advice is advice not a hard, fast rule.

How wide is the window? When we had a similar problem, we just put up one curtain and pulled it back on the side where there was more space. We actually extended the curtain pole further on that side so the curtain completely cleared the sash during the day - which meant it let more light in. It looked fine

I’d do that ^

ie pull the curtain back to one side of the window only.

Option A will make the room darker as the curtains will cover the window on both sides.

Option B is preferred as once the curtains are pulled, only one side of the window will be covered slightly but from a distance you won’t be able to tell that it’s uneven

Using one curtain on the side wirh more space is an idea, but would it look ok aesthetically?

What we did to one of our sash windows is to fit a blackout blind which is fitted inside the frame (it has a honeycomb pattern, made of aluminium I think) and have a nice Roman blind on top. We don’t pull the Roman blind down as not needed, it’s just there to dress the window and the inside blind it’s perfectly black-out. We can still open the window etc.

let me know if you want a link - I’m not sure if we’re allowed to put websites link on posts?

@Gabitule that looks great - just what we need. Just hoping the window is deep enough. Will check later once the little one wakes up.

@Gabitule not sure where I measure - do yours sit in the window recess (red lines on my photo) or the recess of the wider frame (blue lines). Thanks!

It sits where the purple/ blue line is. We’re away this weekend but I’ll send you photos on Monday plus the website we got ours from. It’s not cheap but you only buy it once, it’s 100% black-out and invisible under the Roman blind. We also bought ours because the Roman blind let light in

Gabitule · 12/07/2025 20:31

Actually I’m not sure anymore, I think it sits where the red line is. Our window is a little bit different and the blind blends in so perfectly that I can’t remember where it actually sits. Doh, I feel a bit dumb. The photos will show clearly

Gabitule · 12/07/2025 21:50

Op, my partner just clarified that the frame for the blind sits where the purple line is. Sorry for the confusion

We bought ours from Blind2go. If you have any questions about how to measure you can email them, they’ve been helpful.

Thank you that is so helpful! Really appreciate you checking for me.
