Filling gaps above skirting board?

Shinyandnew1 · 11/07/2025 14:53

Can anyone advise me what to do with gaps above skirting-between the top of the skirting and the wall -it's the skirting going up the stairs in our loft conversion (10 years on)

We want to sand and paint the skirting boards and decorate up the stairs ready for new carpets but these gaps look awful.

What should I use to fill them with and how? Polyfilla? I'm
Scared I'll make it look worse than it does now Blush

Caulk is what you need and a caulk gun.

Yep. Decorators caulk so you can paint over it. It is flexible so will stay in place even if the boards move a bit.

This woman is a professional decorator. Having refurbed houses myself over the last 30 years, she is a great person to get advice from. This is how to fill stair cracks.

If the gap is small I use a sealant gun with flexible white acrylic filler. It can be painted over afterwards

Caulk fails. I use CT1 and smooth it with Multisolve, more expensive but an absolutely brilliant product - strong adhesive properties, flexible and can be repainted. Can be used to seal in a bathroom too - even over wet surfaces! Amazing stuff.

@Weerit is that the trade name or equivalent of no more nails?

Can you give more detail for an amateur? What is CT1?

Have a look for CT1 and Multisolve on YouTube and it’s lot the same as no more nails, it’s amazing stuff.
